Weber State Volleyball Wins at UVU; Aldridge Jr. Visits Campus

The ball thudded against the canvas of the net, sealing a four-set victory for Weber State volleyball. The Wildcats rolled past Utah Valley, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-22 after dropping the opener, leaving Ogden with a 7-3 nonconference record. Senior Rose Moore anchored the offense with 20 kills and 11 digs, driving a nine-point run that broke the match open in the second set. The team now enters Big Sky Conference play with momentum, facing Eastern Washington and Idaho on the road this week.
On the other side of campus, the women’s soccer club absorbed a third straight defeat, falling 3-0 to the Wolverines. A transfer from BYU, Josie Clawsom, scored twice, exploiting a defensive gap that allowed Utah Valley to control the tempo despite a narrow 7-5 shot advantage. Lauren Butorac made four saves, but the Wildcats remain 3-5-1. They host Colorado State on Friday to end nonconference action before their first Big Sky home games arrive in mid-October.
Aldridge visits campus
While the football crowd roared in the stands, a different kind of attention focused on the men’s basketball program. LaMarcus Aldridge Jr., known as LJ, arrived in Ogden with his father, the former NBA star. The pair flew in on a private jet and spent the weekend on campus, including attending the home football game. LJ is a six-foot-six prospect in the class of 2028, and his presence signals a high-profile interest in the Wildcats' future roster.
Roster depth remains a question
Weber State basketball currently has 14 of 15 scholarships filled for the current season, with no fifth-year players available. The program has no known commitments in future classes, except for 2026 shooting guard Lincoln Holcombe. Holcombe, a Timpview High alum, is currently serving a mission in Florida for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His return to the court remains a key piece of the puzzle for head coach Kaleb Canales.
Conference schedules take shape
Both volleyball and soccer shift to Big Sky Conference play after their final nonconference matches. The volleyball team travels to Eastern Washington on Thursday and Idaho on Saturday. The soccer team hosts Colorado State on Friday before opening conference play on the road. Their first home conference games are scheduled for October 8 against Utah Tech and October 11 against Southern Utah. The path forward is clear, but the challenge is immediate.
