The grass in East Rutherford is still damp from the morning rain, but the mood in the training complex is dry and tense. Four names are already crossed off the board. The Sunday lineup is thinner than planned.

Four starters ruled out for Sunday

Head coach Aaron Glenn stands on the sideline, looking out at the empty spaces where his starters should be. The New York Jets will be without starting safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr., edge rusher Joseph Ossai, and running back Kene Nwangwu for their Week 2 showdown with the Green Bay Packers. These four players are confirmed out, a significant blow to the roster's depth and versatility just days after the season opener.

The injuries stem from two different sources, creating a patchwork of pain across the squad. Ossai, dealing with a foot issue, and Nwangwu, nursing a back problem, missed the entire first week. Fitzpatrick, hurt in the groin, and Cooper, an ankle issue, both went down during the season-opening victory over the Tennessee Titans. The physical toll of the game is already visible in the empty chairs on the bench.

Backups step into the void

With the primary options unavailable, the backup corps is thrust into the spotlight. Andre Cisco and Malachi Moore are expected to fill in at safety, tasked with covering the secondary. On the perimeter, Isaiah Williams is set to become the third receiver, a role he has not held in a while. With Nwangwu sidelined, Williams also takes over the return duties, adding a new layer of responsibility to his game.

Healthy players return to the fold

Not all news from the medical staff is grim. Glenn confirmed that edge rusher Will McDonald IV and rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds are cleared to play. McDonald, who appeared on the injury report with an ankle concern on Thursday, is expected to be fully active. Ponds, a second-round pick out of Indiana, is set to make his NFL debut after missing Week 1 with a calf injury. Their presence adds much-needed stability to the defensive front and secondary.

The Green Bay Packers, under Matt LaFleur, will release their own injury report later in the day on Friday. The Jets, as reported by Yahoo Sports, are now facing a week of significant roster adjustments. The players remaining on the field must adapt quickly, filling the gaps left by their injured teammates. The ball is in their court, and the pressure is on to deliver despite the absence of key contributors.
