Monmouth Tennis Sweeps Lafayette 7-0 in Season Opener

Monmouth men’s tennis defeated Lafayette 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Easton. The Hawks swept the match to open the 2026-27 campaign. It marked the eighth straight season where they won their opener under head coach Chris Leicht.

The team controlled the early momentum. They won all three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead. The clay surface felt alive underfoot as the players moved with precision. The air in the stadium was thick with anticipation.

Doubles Sweep Sets Early Tone

Ota Ungerman and Oleksandr Vysochenko dominated second doubles. They beat John Dickens and Derrin Lerner 6-0. Axel Engström and Eñaut Garcia secured the next point. They defeated Aidan Mahaffey and Tomas Grygalis 6-4.

Santiago Ledesma and Luka Sauer Jimenez closed the doubles action. They edged Ricky Espaillat and Andreas Foong 7-6. The score was 7-3 in the tiebreak. The net stretched taut across the center of the court.

Singles Players Deliver Decisive Wins

Sauer Jimenez took the first singles point. He beat Dickens 6-3, 6-4. Garcia fought hard for a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory over Mahaffey. Vysochenko secured the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Espaillat.

Ledesma finished his 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 match against Foong. Engström won 6-4, 7-5 against Lerner. Ungerman closed the day with a 6-2, 4-6, 13-11 result against Grygalis.

Next Match Scheduled for Sunday

The team returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 27. They host Adelphi at 12 p.m. Coach Leicht praised the group’s effort in the road win. "We will keep working and get ready for Sunday," he said.
