While industry groups praise the decision for potentially boosting energy production and lowering costs, former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman has condemned the action. Serving under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2003, Whitman described the rollback as unconscionable, arguing that it endangers the health of children and the elderly by prioritizing industry bottom lines over human well-being.
Deregulation Strategy Shifts Agency Priorities
The current administration has eliminated more than 100 EPA rules across air, water, drilling, and toxic substances during President Donald Trump’s second term. Whitman argues that the agency has abandoned its core mission, citing rulemaking documents that indicate officials no longer assign a dollar value to health and climate benefits. Instead, the agency now considers only the financial impacts on industry when evaluating regulations.
An EPA spokesperson disputed this characterization in a statement to Scripps News, asserting that the agency follows legal principles and fulfills its core mission. The spokesperson stated that eliminating all greenhouse gases from power plants would have no material impact on global climate change and noted that the agency continues to regulate pollutants like ozone and fine particulates.
Legal Coalition Challenges Clean Air Act Violations
A coalition of environmental and public health groups filed a lawsuit on Thursday, asking the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to block the rollback. The plaintiffs argue that the new rules violate the Clean Air Act. Dr. Georges Benjamin, CEO of the American Public Health Association, stated that power plant pollution threatens the health of millions and fuels climate change, making the weakening of these standards a significant risk.
EPA Claims Trillion-Dollar Deregulatory Savings
The EPA maintains that its actions have delivered over $1.3 trillion in deregulatory savings for the American people. The agency asserts that it is fiercely protecting human health and the environment while reducing regulatory burdens. This stance contrasts sharply with the legal challenge now underway, which seeks to reinstate the stricter emission standards recently proposed for elimination.
