GE Vernova marked the commercial commissioning of Nhon Trach 3&4 on March 10, establishing it as Vietnam’s first LNG-to-power facility. The 1.6 GW plant, developed by PetroVietnam Power Corporation, marks the country's first deployment of GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 gas turbine technology.
Simultaneously, the company announced a roughly $200 million investment to build a new high-voltage direct current manufacturing facility in Hai Phong. These moves were unveiled at the inaugural Energy of Change Summit in Hanoi, attended by over 400 industry and government leaders.
Commissioning Vietnam's first LNG facility
The Nhon Trach 3&4 plant utilizes HA-class turbines, which are among the most efficient commercially available gas turbines. The facility is designed to enhance grid reliability and stability, a critical requirement as Vietnam integrates higher volumes of renewable energy sources into its national grid.
This capacity provides flexible, fast-responding backup generation, which is essential for balancing the variable output of wind and solar power. The project signals a strategic shift toward diversified energy mix capabilities in the region.
Three additional LNG projects selected
GE Vernova announced technology selection agreements for three further LNG projects, adding six 9HA.02 gas turbines and six H78 generators to the pipeline. These include the Quynh Lap project by PV Power and the Hai Phong plant by a Vingroup joint venture.
The third project is Quang Trach II in Quang Binh Province, which is being converted from a coal plant to LNG under national energy strategy guidelines. Each of these projects has an installed capacity of approximately 1.6 GW, though technology selection does not constitute a firm order.
Localizing HVDC manufacturing capabilities
The $200 million investment in Hai Phong targets the production of large power transformers. This facility aims to strengthen regional supply chain resilience and support the grid infrastructure needed for high-tech industrial development.
According to reports from energiesmedia.com, the summit also featured a Supplier Summit that drew over 100 organizations. The goal is to build a more robust local manufacturing base that aligns with Vietnam's energy transition priorities.
