Marathon Petroleum allocates 65% of its $1.5 billion 2026 capital budget to value-enhancing projects, aiming for returns of 25% or higher through completed and upcoming upgrades at key refineries.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is directing $1.5 billion in capital spending for 2026, excluding MPLX, with a strict focus on high-return refinery projects. The company allocates approximately 65% of this budget to value-enhancing investments and 35% to sustaining operations, a strategy designed to improve product yields, expand operational flexibility, and reduce costs across its refining system.

Several initiatives are already generating results, with the Garyville jet flexibility project completed in the first quarter and the El Paso and Robinson projects entering service in the second quarter. These upgrades are aligned with management’s targeted internal rate of return of 25% or higher, positioning the company to capture stronger margins in diverse market conditions.

Completed Upgrades Boost Regional Output

The El Paso project upgrades fluid catalytic cracking and alkylation units, enhancing the refinery’s ability to produce specialty gasoline for markets in El Paso, Phoenix, and Mexico. Simultaneously, the Robinson flexibility project adds approximately 10,000 barrels per day of jet fuel production capacity, allowing Marathon Petroleum to respond to growing regional demand for this high-value product.

Future Projects Expand Diesel Capacity

By the end of 2027, the company plans to complete a 90,000-barrel-per-day distillate hydrotreater at Galveston Bay, which will increase the supply of high-value ultra-low sulfur diesel. At Garyville, feedstock optimization is expected to lift crude throughput by 30,000 barrels per day, while another project will add 10,000 barrels per day of export-premium gasoline capacity and reduce operating costs.

Peers Follow Similar Investment Strategies

Valero Energy Corporation expects to invest $2 billion in 2026, with growth spending focused on shorter-cycle optimization projects like a $230 million FCC unit upgrade at St. Charles. HF Sinclair Corporation is also advancing the El Dorado vacuum furnace project, which supports up to 10,000 barrels per day of additional heavy crude processing. According to GN auto stocks/energy-stocks: refinery margins, these peer actions reflect a broader industry trend toward optimizing existing assets to improve earnings stability and cash flow.
