Seplat Energy shares have surged 166% year-to-date, reaching a record N14,907.80, driven by a 74% jump in pre-tax profits and increased oil equivalent output.

Seplat Energy Plc shares have appreciated by 165.9 percent since the beginning of 2026, reaching a record closing price of N14,907.80 on the Nigerian Exchange. According to data cited by GN stocks/shares-surge, the stock jumped 10 percent on September 10 alone, moving from N13,552.60 to its new peak. This performance marks one of the strongest rallies among large-cap Nigerian equities, with the share price now nearly triple its level from a year ago.

The re-rating of Seplat’s equity is underpinned by fundamental improvements in its operational metrics. For the six-month period ending June 2026, the company reported a 74.1 percent year-on-year increase in profit before tax to N790.4 billion. Revenue expanded by 15.5 percent to N2.50 trillion, while daily production of oil equivalents rose to 139,509 barrels. These figures indicate that the market valuation shift is supported by tangible growth in both earnings and output volume.

Financial Performance Drives Valuation Shift

The improvement in pre-tax profits reflects the efficiency of Seplat’s expanded production base following the consolidation of its offshore assets. In 2025, the group achieved an average production of 131,506 barrels of oil equivalent per day and recorded annual revenue of $2.73 billion. The jump to N790.4 billion in half-year 2026 profits suggests that the company is successfully translating higher output into stronger bottom-line results. This earnings momentum provides a concrete basis for the stock’s increased appeal to investors seeking exposure to growing African energy producers.

However, the magnitude of the share price increase exceeds the growth rate in revenue and profit, indicating that forward-looking expectations are also influencing valuation. Investors appear to be pricing in continued benefits from Seplat’s expanded asset base. Higher production volumes provide the company with greater exposure to crude oil prices, creating additional scope for cash-flow growth. The market is likely rewarding the company’s ability to maintain and scale this output, rather than just reacting to current earnings.

London Listing Mirrors Nigerian Gains

Seplat’s international valuation has strengthened in parallel with its domestic performance. The London-listed shares, traded under the ticker SEPL, reached an all-time high of 845 pence on September 16 before closing at 839 pence. This level represents a significant increase from 768 pence on September 10. Although the stock subsequently fell 2.7 percent to 816 pence on September 17, it remained well above its earlier levels. The simultaneous appreciation in both markets suggests that the rally is driven by fundamental corporate strength rather than local trading anomalies.

The dual-market performance provides a broader view of how Seplat is valued globally. As the company positions itself as a major independent energy producer in Africa, its stock is attracting interest from investors looking for exposure to the sector’s growth. The consistency of the price action in London reinforces the narrative that Seplat’s operational improvements are recognized across different investor bases, adding credibility to the valuation increase seen in Lagos.

Global Oil Dynamics Influence Sector Outlook

External factors in the global energy market also contribute to the backdrop for Seplat’s performance. Heightened geopolitical tensions, including uncertainties regarding vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, have increased volatility in crude oil prices. While higher global crude prices can improve revenue expectations for producers, Seplat’s results depend on realized prices, production levels, and cost management. The company’s stock performance is therefore a combination of company-specific drivers and broader market conditions.

It is important to distinguish between the company’s intrinsic growth and the impact of global oil price movements. Seplat’s increased production base and improved earnings provide specific value drivers that are independent of short-term crude price fluctuations. However, the broader valuation environment for energy stocks is influenced by geopolitical risks and supply dynamics. Investors are likely assessing Seplat’s resilience and growth potential in this volatile context, contributing to the sustained demand for its shares.
