SRP Marigold Energy Center Faces State Siting Hearing
SRP’s proposed mixed-generation project in Stanfield enters a critical regulatory phase as the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee convenes for its initial public hearing.
SRP’s Marigold Energy Center is scheduled to undergo a formal state siting review beginning September 21. The project, located in Stanfield south of Maricopa, combines solar, battery storage, and gas-fired generation. The Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee will hold the initial session at 10 a.m. at the Francisco Grande Hotel & Golf Resort in Casa Grande.
The hearing is set to continue at 9 a.m. on subsequent weekdays through September 25, depending on the volume of testimony. A separate public comment session is planned for 5:30 p.m. on the first day. Residents may participate in person, via telephone, or through Zoom. The process follows community concerns raised during a July open house regarding water use, emissions, and local air quality.
Project Specifications and Infrastructure Scope
SRP’s proposal includes 600 megawatts of solar generation and 400 megawatts of battery storage. The facility also plans for up to 675 megawatts of gas-fired generation to provide baseload capacity. Infrastructure components comprise a 230-kilovolt and 500-kilovolt substation and approximately four miles of new 230-kilovolt transmission lines. These specifications define the physical footprint and grid integration strategy for the mixed-generation facility.
Regulatory Timeline and Public Input
The state committee’s review serves as the primary regulatory gate for the project’s approval. The multi-day hearing format allows for extensive testimony from stakeholders, including SRP officials and local residents. SRP has stated it is addressing community concerns related to public safety, fire risk, and environmental impact. The outcome of this phase will determine whether the project proceeds to the next stage of development.
Local Utility Partnership Evaluations
Electrical District No. 3, which serves Maricopa and Stanfield, is currently evaluating a potential partnership with SRP. The district is considering purchasing a portion of the energy generated by the Marigold Energy Center. This commercial arrangement could alter the distribution of power from the facility to local consumers. The final structure of this deal remains under review as the siting process advances.
