Bank of America forecasts the S&P 500 will reach 7,800 within 12 months, citing resilient corporate earnings despite sticky inflation and potential Fed tightening.

Bank of America has updated its equity outlook, projecting the S&P 500 will climb to 7,800 over the next 12 months. This target implies approximately 2% upside from current trading levels near 7,600. The bank also raised its year-end 2026 target to 7,400, up from 7,100, signaling a constructive but cautious stance on U.S. equities.

Strategist Savita Subramanian noted that while the long-term direction remains positive, near-term gains are expected to be modest. The bank flagged that the market is overdue for a correction, as 2026 has seen only one 5% pullback compared to an average of three. Additionally, roughly half of Bank of America’s bear-market indicators have already been triggered, highlighting underlying fragility despite year-to-date index growth of about 10%.

Inflation and Fed Policy Headwinds

The forecast arrives as investors brace for a Federal Reserve decision, with markets pricing in a high probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike on September 16. Sticky inflation data, surging oil prices above $100 per barrel, and Treasury yields nearing 5% have intensified policy uncertainty. Bank of America argues that current equity valuations assume a lower inflation environment than its economists predict, drawing parallels to the prolonged market decline of the 1970s driven by aggressive monetary tightening.

Earnings Growth and Valuation Risks

Corporate earnings resilience has supported the S&P 500’s gains this year, though weakness in technology and semiconductor stocks has added volatility. Bank of America projects 33% earnings growth for 2026 and a further 12% increase in 2027. The bank attributes this durability to productivity gains from artificial intelligence and automation, which allow companies to replace labor-intensive processes with scalable technologies, thereby protecting profitability margins.

Strategic Positioning and Sector Preferences

From a positioning standpoint, Bank of America favors large-cap value stocks and select small- and mid-cap opportunities over traditional growth sectors. The bank also recommends the equal-weighted S&P 500 index over the market-cap-weighted benchmark to mitigate concentration risks. This strategy reflects the firm’s view that diversification is essential given tightening credit conditions and persistent macroeconomic headwinds outlined in the GN stocks/sp500 report.
