Bitcoin Clears $86k, Driving MicroStrategy and Coinbase Gains

Bitcoin's breakout above $86,000 triggered a $300 million short squeeze, lifting MicroStrategy 8% and Coinbase 5% amid easing inflation fears.
Key points
- Bitcoin closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, breaking the $86,000 barrier.
- MicroStrategy rose 8% and Coinbase gained 5% as a $300 million short squeeze fueled the sector rally.
- Falling oil prices and lower Treasury yields supported the move, shifting markets into a risk-on mode.
Crypto-linked equities surged on Monday following bitcoin's first weekly close above its 50-week moving average in 45 weeks. The asset broke through $86,000, a level not seen in eight months, triggering a $300 million short squeeze that propelled sector stocks higher.
MicroStrategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:MSTR) led the rally, climbing as much as 8% on the momentum. Coinbase Global Inc (NASDAQ:COIN) rose approximately 5%, while miners Marathon Digital (NASDAQ:MARA) and Bit Digital Inc (NASDAQ:BTBT) advanced roughly 6% and 8% respectively. The broader move coincided with a fourth consecutive session of falling oil prices, which reduced inflation concerns and lowered Treasury yields.
Risk-on sentiment returns to market
Markets shifted into a risk-on mode after weeks of anxiety over government debt and central bank policy. Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, noted that bitcoin had not traded above $80,000 for months until this early-session breach. He attributed the strength to recent capital inflows, suggesting the move may attract further funding as investors adjust to a higher US interest rate environment.
Regulatory uncertainty persists despite rally
The price action occurs against a backdrop of unsettled regulatory prospects following the collapse of the Clarity Act in Congress. Beauchamp warned that the bill's failure leaves the industry in a turf war between the SEC and CFTC, with little chance of resolution before the midterms. He described the next two years as a likely period of bitter partisan conflict, creating a more uncertain future for the sector despite the current price strength.
Historical patterns favor continued gains
The breakout helps reignite investor interest after enthusiasm faded from the August rally. Historically, bitcoin has posted negative average returns in August and September, but Monday's move places it back into a traditionally positive ten-month stretch. This seasonal shift, combined with the technical breakout, provides a fundamental basis for renewed institutional focus on the asset class.
