Morgan Stanley and Evercore have joined forces with OpenAI to deploy a specialized version of ChatGPT for financial services. The tool is designed to automate the research, document generation, and pitch book assembly tasks typically performed by junior banking analysts. According to reporting from CNBC, this automation aims to reduce the extensive hours currently required for these standardized functions, shifting the labor burden from human analysts to machine processing.

OpenAI executive Nik Turley described the system as teaching ChatGPT to research and substantiate conclusions like a professional analyst. The firm stated that while the tool increases productivity, it does not eliminate the need for human analysts. Instead, it allows them to focus on higher-value tasks. For investors, the critical question is whether this efficiency gain translates into improved bank margins or if competitive pressure dissipates the financial benefit.

High Advisory Volumes Drive AI Adoption

The adoption of this technology is driven by the intense demand in the investment banking sector. Morgan Stanley reported second-quarter investment banking revenue of $2.44 billion, a 58% year-over-year increase, with advisory revenue alone reaching $798 million. Similarly, Evercore executed 296 fee-paying advisory engagements in the same period, including 132 fees exceeding $1 million. This surge in activity makes standardized research and documentation prime targets for automation.

Morgan Stanley CEO Ted Pick identified artificial intelligence as a defining theme for 2026. In the company’s Q2 2026 8-K filing, Pick noted that the potential for enhanced efficiencies and productivity is only beginning to be realized. By automating the grunt work of the analyst tier, the banks aim to allow senior bankers to cover more clients without a proportional increase in headcount.

Productivity Gains May Not Boost Margins

Compensation is the largest cost component for advisory firms, with Evercore’s adjusted compensation ratio at 63.5% and Morgan Stanley’s firmwide efficiency ratio at 65% year-to-date. While automating analyst hours could theoretically lower costs, historical financial technology trends suggest otherwise. Previous productivity improvements, such as electronic execution, typically increased transaction volume and compressed pricing rather than widening profit margins.

Since advisory fees are negotiated per deal, widespread adoption of such tools by competitors will likely lead corporate clients to price in the efficiency gains. The probable outcome is an increase in the number of deals each senior banker can handle, rather than a permanent expansion of margins. Morgan Stanley currently posts a 26.6% return on tangible common equity, a figure that remains subject to cyclical market forces.

Junior Analyst Pipeline Faces Structural Risk

OpenAI compares the tool to the introduction of spreadsheets, which increased productivity without eliminating the profession. However, this analogy overlooks the critical role of the junior tier in training future senior leaders. If the entry-level positions that provide this apprenticeship are significantly reduced, the long-term pipeline for skilled advisors may be compromised.

Both firms are simultaneously investing in human capital and technology to mitigate this risk. Evercore has added 19 new senior managing directors year-to-date, bringing its global count to 188. Morgan Stanley, trading at a trailing P/E of 17x, faces the challenge of maintaining its franchise value while integrating AI.
