U.S. equities remain cautious as traders await the Federal Reserve's interest rate announcement, with oil prices and bond yields providing marginal relief to market sentiment.

Wall Street traded cautiously on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 rising 0.2% for its second gain in eight days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.1%, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.5%. Investors are bracing for the Federal Reserve to announce its first interest rate hike since 2023 later in the day, a move expected to curb persistent inflation by increasing borrowing costs and slowing economic activity.

Market pressure eased slightly as Brent crude oil prices fell 1.1% to $107.59 per barrel, down from near $110 earlier in the week. This decline helped pull the 10-year Treasury yield down to 4.97% from 5.00% late Tuesday. Although the yield recently crossed the 5% threshold for the first time since 2023, current levels remain significantly higher than the 3.97% recorded before the conflict in Iran, which had kept oil prices at $72.

Sector Performance and AI Resilience

Artificial intelligence stocks showed stability following a global slide earlier in the week, a period marked by industry leaders calling for development pauses to address safety concerns. Nvidia shares rose 0.8%, and Advanced Micro Devices climbed 2.6%, helping offset broader market weaknesses. In contrast, J.B. Hunt Transport Services dropped 10.5% after its chief financial officer warned analysts that rising costs would likely cause earnings to decline from the second to the third quarter.

Strong Consumer Data Supports Hike

A report released Wednesday morning indicated that U.S. retail spending last month exceeded economist expectations. This data point may bolster the Federal Reserve's confidence in raising rates, suggesting the economy is robust enough to withstand higher borrowing costs. However, the surge in spending could also reflect consumers paying higher prices rather than genuine growth, adding ambiguity to the inflation outlook.

Global Markets and Policy Context

International markets reacted positively, with indexes rising across Europe and Asia. South Korea’s Kospi index gained 1.4%, marking one of the largest daily increases globally. The Federal Reserve’s decision comes as the European Central Bank recently raised rates to combat inflation. Traders are pricing in a high probability of a hike, though a pause could trigger market swings if interpreted as a weakened commitment to controlling inflation, according to reports from GN stocks/nasdaq.
