GE Aerospace Acquires CPP to Secure Critical Casting Supply

GE Aerospace is purchasing Consolidated Precision Products for $11.75 billion to internalize production of flight-critical castings, a move that secures its own supply chain while potentially tightening capacity for competitors.
GE Aerospace has agreed to acquire Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) for $11.75 billion, a strategic vertical integration play designed to secure control over one of the aerospace industry’s most constrained production inputs: complex flight-critical castings. The transaction targets a specific bottleneck in the supply chain, moving capacity for advanced investment and precision sand castings directly under the roof of one of the world’s largest engine manufacturers. This move shifts the dynamic from managing a critical vendor to owning the production asset, directly impacting how GE Aerospace delivers engines for commercial and defense platforms.
The acquisition is driven by a structural capacity problem rather than a temporary supply disruption. GE Aerospace expects airfoil demand to rise more than 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2026 levels, driven simultaneously by new-engine production, aftermarket demand, and defense requirements. By internalizing CPP, which already supplies approximately 25 percent of GE Aerospace’s casting needs, the company aims to stabilize yields, improve quality, and reduce reliance on external procurement for components that are difficult to source elsewhere. The deal is valued at roughly 26 times expected 2027 EBITDA before synergies, reflecting the high scarcity value of qualified casting capacity in the current market.
Internalizing Critical Casting Capacity
CPP brings specialized manufacturing assets and a skilled workforce to GE Aerospace, with approximately 6,600 employees across more than 20 facilities. The Cleveland-based firm supports major GE programs, including LEAP, GEnx, T700, and F110, with about 70 percent of its revenue derived from commercial and defense engines. GE Aerospace projects CPP will generate roughly $2 billion in revenue by 2027. The company plans to apply its FLIGHT DECK operational model to these facilities to raise machine utilization, cut scrap and rework, and integrate design with manufacturing to accelerate the adoption of enhanced airfoil technology in current and next-generation platforms.
Industry Capacity Constraints Tighten
While the acquisition strengthens GE Aerospace’s position, it may exacerbate supply constraints for other engine makers and aircraft OEMs. CPP produces castings for nearly every major current-generation commercial aircraft program and serves various defense and power customers. By bringing this capacity under the ownership of a major OEM with its own rapidly growing requirements, the market for third-party advanced castings shrinks. Competitors such as Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce are also investing heavily in internal capacity, with Pratt & Whitney spending about $1 billion on a new airfoil facility in North Carolina. This trend indicates that control of airfoil production is becoming a core competitive advantage rather than a commodity procurement item.
Strategic Implications For Supply Chain
The deal underscores that advanced castings are not easily substitutable components. Production requires specialized tooling, wax patterns, ceramic shells, and controlled melting processes that take significant time to qualify. Ownership change alone does not create new capacity, but it does align incentives for long-term investment in equipment and workforce development.
