Hanwha Aerospace has secured a mass-production contract for the Arion-SMET, becoming the first manufacturer to deliver an autonomous ground vehicle to the South Korean military.

Hanwha Aerospace has finalized a mass-production agreement with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the Arion-SMET, South Korea’s first multipurpose uncrewed ground vehicle. The contract, signed on September 4, initiates staged deliveries to Army and Marine Corps infantry units beginning next year. This milestone marks the transition of the platform from developmental testing to operational deployment, positioning Hanwha as the primary supplier of autonomous logistics assets for the nation’s ground forces.

The vehicle is engineered to reduce physical burden and exposure for infantry troops by executing supply missions without a driver. Capable of traveling up to 60 kilometers per hour and carrying a payload of approximately 450 kilograms, the Arion-SMET performs off-road autonomous driving and soldier-following tasks. Hanwha reported that the system completed military selection tests without a single mechanical failure, validating its mechanical reliability and readiness for field conditions.

Operational Capabilities and Safety Protocols

The platform integrates an AI-based remote fire control system with a 7.62-millimeter weapon station that tracks targets while the vehicle is in motion. However, the operational architecture strictly enforces human oversight for lethal engagement. While artificial intelligence handles target detection and tracking, the decision to fire remains exclusively with the human operator. This design ensures that autonomous systems do not independently identify hostile targets or execute attacks, maintaining a clear chain of command for critical actions.

The vehicle’s ability to autonomously follow a soldier without operator intervention allows it to function as a mobile support unit in dynamic environments. During demonstrations at the Changwon Plant 2, the Arion-SMET matched the path of a walking employee and executed preset supply transport routes. These features are designed to facilitate rapid extraction from dangerous areas and the efficient delivery of essential supplies to forward positions.

Supply Chain Localization and Development History

Hanwha Aerospace has achieved a localization rate of at least 98 percent for the Arion-SMET, sourcing components from approximately 40 Korean suppliers. This high degree of domestic production is intended to streamline logistics and accelerate maintenance cycles in the field. The development process began in 2016 under a civil-military cooperation project, with a second-generation model undergoing the U.S. Department of Defense’s Foreign Comparative Testing program in late 2023. The current third-generation model incorporates feedback from these international trials to enhance performance.

Strategic Expansion of Unmanned Vehicle Fleet

The Arion-SMET serves as the foundation for a broader industrial strategy within the GN auto stocks/industrials: aerospace supply sector. Hanwha Aerospace plans to establish six common uncrewed ground vehicle platforms by 2030, covering light, medium, and heavy weight classes. This expansion aims to create a standardized ecosystem of autonomous assets, allowing for modular upgrades and interoperability across different military roles. The company’s focus on manned-unmanned teaming R&D continues to drive innovation in autonomous logistics and combat support.
