Hitachi Energy Invests $528m in Mississippi Transformer Plant

Hitachi Energy will construct a $528 million transformer manufacturing facility in Gallman, Mississippi, targeting 2029 operational start to boost US grid capacity.
Hitachi Energy has committed $528 million to construct a new transformer manufacturing facility in Gallman, Mississippi. The project is designed to more than double the company's existing production footprint in the region, which currently operates out of a nearby Crystal Springs site. This expansion is intended to address the rising demand for high-voltage components driven by data centers, industrial electrification, and grid modernization efforts across the United States.
The new plant is projected to create over 700 jobs upon completion. It will serve as the centerpiece of a broader US manufacturing program that totals approximately $1.5 billion. This strategic investment includes additional facilities in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, collectively aimed at reinforcing domestic grid resilience and reducing reliance on imported power grid equipment.
Facility scale and production timeline
Construction on the Gallman site is scheduled to commence later this year, with transformer manufacturing expected to begin in 2029. The new facility will be more than twice the size of the current Crystal Springs plant, which is located approximately 6.5 miles away. Once operational, Hitachi Energy plans to transfer all transformer production from Crystal Springs to the new Gallman location to consolidate manufacturing efficiency.
Workforce impact and regional commitment
The company estimates that its ongoing US manufacturing projects will support more than 1,600 jobs in total. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves highlighted the investment as a significant win for the state’s economy, noting that Hitachi Energy chose Mississippi for its largest US investment. The firm stated that the Crystal Springs site will continue operations until the new plant is fully functional, after which it will be repurposed for warehousing and training to maintain local employment.
Strategic context and grid demand
This expansion aligns with Hitachi Energy’s cooperation with federal and state officials to enhance domestic infrastructure. The increased capacity is specifically targeted at meeting the electrical demands of advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure. According to GN auto stocks/utilities: power plant, these investments are part of a broader industry shift toward securing supply chains and ensuring reliable power distribution for critical national infrastructure.
