Basin Energy Partners with JCU for Heavy Rare Earths

Basin Energy secures a cost-free research alliance with James Cook University to refine heavy rare earth extraction techniques at its Sybella-Barkly project.
Basin Energy (ASX:BSN) has formalized a research agreement with James Cook University under the Australian Government’s RTCM Trailblazer program. The partnership targets the characterization and environmentally improved extraction of rare earth elements, with a specific emphasis on heavy rare earths at the Sybella-Barkly Project in North West Queensland. This move ties Basin directly to federal research infrastructure without imposing any financial burden on the company’s balance sheet.
The agreement, effective through June 1, 2029, requires Basin to provide access to its existing project data, drilling chips, assay pulps, and sample archives. In exchange, the university will develop project-specific flowsheets and improved extraction methods. This arrangement allows Basin to leverage academic expertise in mineral processing while continuing to advance the Newmans prospect, where recent drilling confirmed a 3.3-kilometer magnet rare earth corridor.
Zero-Cash-Cost Research Alliance
The financial structure of the deal is strictly non-cash. Basin incurs no direct payment obligations for the research services provided by JCU. Instead, the company contributes physical assets and data from its exploration efforts, including auger, aircore, and reverse circulation drilling materials. This input satisfies the program requirements while preserving Basin’s capital for ongoing exploration activities at Newmans and other portfolio assets.
Intellectual property generated by the research team will be owned by James Cook University. However, Basin retains a royalty-free, non-exclusive, worldwide license to use this technology in any mining or exploration project where it holds a legal or beneficial interest. This clause ensures that any breakthroughs in heavy rare earth extraction can be applied directly to Basin’s operations without licensing fees or royalty payments to the university.
Heavy Rare Earth Focus
The collaboration prioritizes heavy rare earth elements, which are critical components for advanced technologies. The JCU research team has already conducted on-site characterization work at Newmans alongside Basin’s exploration manager. Early findings were presented at a recent RTCM Trailblazer Research Showcase, indicating that the data pipeline is active and generating immediate technical insights for the project.
Managing Director Pete Moorhouse stated that the partnership connects Basin with leading Australian research capability. He emphasized that the project-specific processing knowledge developed through this alliance will directly benefit the company’s strategic objectives. This focus on heavy rare earths aligns Basin’s technical development with global demand for critical minerals used in high-tech applications.
Operational Continuity at Newmans
Basin continues to advance exploration at Newmans following drilling that defined a thick, shallow, and high-grade magnet rare earth mineralization zone. The 3.3-kilometer corridor identified at the prospect remains the primary target for the research collaboration. By integrating academic flowsheet development with ongoing field work, Basin aims to refine its understanding of the ore body’s processing requirements.
The company’s portfolio also includes uranium projects in Canada and Sweden, but this specific agreement is focused on the rare earth assets in Queensland. The arrangement supports Basin’s broader strategy of developing local expertise in critical minerals processing.
