China Aluminium Output Hits Record High in August

Chinese smelters maximized production in August, pushing output to a record level and bringing annual totals close to the national capacity ceiling.
China’s primary aluminium production reached a record high in August, rising 4.7 percent year on year to 3.98 million tonnes. This surge reflects strong profit margins that have incentivized smelters to operate at maximum efficiency. The monthly figure surpassed the 3.9 million tonnes recorded in July and closely approached the previous monthly peak of 3.979 million tonnes set in June.
For the first eight months of 2026, national output totaled 31.12 million tonnes, marking a 3.9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. At this current pace, annual production is projected to reach approximately 46.7 million tonnes. This trajectory exceeds the 45 million-tonne capacity ceiling that China has strictly enforced since 2017, raising operational questions for industry participants.
Price gains drive smelter activity
Rising aluminium prices have directly supported higher output levels. Benchmark three-month aluminium on the London Metal Exchange has gained nearly 8 percent year to date, including a 1.82 percent increase in August alone. These gains follow supply disruptions in the Middle East linked to ongoing conflict. The improved pricing environment has encouraged producers to maintain high operational rates despite the proximity to regulatory limits.
In 2025, China produced 45.02 million tonnes of primary aluminium, a 2.4 percent increase from the prior year. The continued growth observed in 2026 positions the country to exceed last year’s production levels. However, the pace of this expansion highlights the tension between market profitability and the strict controls maintained on smelting capacity.
Non-ferrous metals show broader growth
Production trends in other base metals also indicate upward momentum. Output for ten non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead, zinc, and nickel, increased 1.6 percent year on year to 7.1 million tonnes in August. For the January-August period, combined production of these metals reached 55.58 million tonnes, representing a 2.9 percent rise from the same period in the previous year.
The August record for aluminium underscores how favorable market conditions are driving production to its limits. As output approaches the national ceiling, the industry faces a critical balance between maximizing returns from high margins and adhering to regulatory frameworks. This dynamic will likely influence future supply strategies and operational planning for major producers.
Source data confirms production trends
These figures are drawn from data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. The consistent rise in output metrics across multiple metals suggests a broader industrial expansion rather than an isolated sector event. Market participants are monitoring these developments closely as they impact global supply chains and pricing structures for base metals.
