Europe’s Gold Output Lags While New Spanish Projects Emerge

Europe's 2025 gold output is led by Finland and Bulgaria, while Spain relies on a single primary mine despite new mineralization discoveries.
Key points
- Finland led European gold production in 2025 with 8.7 tonnes, ahead of Bulgaria and Sweden.
- Spain's only primary gold mine, El Valle-Boinás, produced 29,276 ounces, slightly below guidance.
- Pan Global Resources identified significant gold mineralization at its Cármenes Project in Spain.
European gold production remains a minor contributor to global supply, with 2025 output dominated by Finland, Bulgaria, and Sweden. According to data cited by Investing News Network, the region’s limited mine base creates a supply gap that emerging projects are beginning to address.
In Spain, a jurisdiction with a deep mining history, current production is constrained to a single primary mine. This scarcity highlights the potential of new discoveries, such as recent mineralization identified at Pan Global Resources' Cármenes Project, which marks the most significant gold find in the country in three decades.
2025 Production Led by Northern Europe
Finland recorded the highest European gold output in 2025 at 8.7 tonnes, followed by Bulgaria with 8.1 tonnes and Sweden with 5.9 tonnes. These figures underscore the geographic concentration of active mining operations in the north, leaving southern regions with significantly lower primary production volumes.
Spain's Single Primary Mine Operates
Orovalle Minerals, a subsidiary of Orvana Minerals, operates the El Valle-Boinás mine in Asturias, the only active primary gold mine in Spain. The asset produced 29,276 ounces of gold, a figure approximately 2 percent below the revised guidance range of 30,000 to 31,000 ounces due to stope extraction timing.
Beyond El Valle-Boinás, Spain’s gold supply relies on byproduct recovery from polymetallic operations. Mines such as Atalaya Mining's Riotinto and the Sandfire MATSA joint venture's Aguas Teñidas in Huelva recover small amounts of gold and silver from copper, zinc, and lead ores in the Iberian Pyrite Belt.
New Discoveries Target Supply Gaps
Pan Global Resources recently identified potentially significant gold mineralization at the Providencia mine within its Cármenes Project in northern Spain. This discovery, located 70km from El Valle-Boinás, represents a shift in exploration activity in a traditional jurisdiction, aiming to bridge the continent's production shortfall.
