Honda Ventures Backs Niron Rare Earth Free Magnet Expansion

Honda's investment arm commits to Niron Magnetics to secure domestic magnet supply chains.
Honda Motor Co Ltd has committed an undisclosed sum to Niron Magnetics through its Honda Xcelerator Ventures program. This investment aims to support the Minneapolis-based firm in commercializing its iron nitride magnets, which offer an alternative to rare earth materials currently dominated by Chinese supply chains.
The funding coincides with the ceremonial column-raising at Niron’s new manufacturing site in Sartell, Minnesota. The 287,000-square-foot facility is designed to produce up to 1,500 tons of magnets annually by 2027, marking the company’s transition from pilot-scale testing to large-scale commercial production.
Sartell Plant Reaches Construction Milestone
Niron secured $300 million in loans to fund the Sartell complex, which is expected to create approximately 175 full-time jobs. This facility represents a significant scale-up from the company’s existing pilot plant in Minneapolis, providing the infrastructure necessary to meet demand from electric vehicle and industrial sectors.
Strategic Backing From Global Automakers
Honda’s entry into Niron’s capital structure follows earlier investments by major industry players. Stellantis and General Motors joined a $33 million round in 2023, while Samsung Ventures led a $25 million round in 2024. These funds have helped Niron develop its technology beyond the lab stage, securing a position as a key supplier for rare-earth-free motor components.
Iron Nitride Performance Remains Distinct
While iron nitride magnets offer supply chain independence, they do not match the performance of neodymium magnets in all metrics, particularly regarding resistance to demagnetization. Competitors like Materials Nexus and Ames National Laboratory are pursuing similar alternatives, but Niron stands out with its functioning pilot line and active construction of a commercial plant.
