Lundin Mining Spends $215M to Boost Copper, Gold Assets

Lundin Mining closed a $215 million asset purchase and reported $1.2 billion in Q2 revenue, maintaining full-year production targets.
Key points
- Lundin Mining reported $1.2 billion in Q2 revenue and $360 million in free cash flow.
- The company spent $215 million to increase ownership in Caserones to 75% and acquire Los Helados.
- Management confirmed full-year production guidance remains on track despite weather-related mine plan adjustments.
Lundin Mining reported $1.2 billion in second-quarter revenue and $360 million in free cash flow, driven by strong copper prices and disciplined cost management. The company generated approximately 76,900 tons of copper during the period, maintaining operational stability despite weather-related disruptions at its sites.
The company completed the acquisition of an additional 5% interest in the Caserones mine and a 31% stake in the Los Helados project for a total of $215 million. This transaction increases ownership in Caserones to 75% and expands the mineral resource base with a new copper-gold deposit located 17 kilometers from the existing operation.
Asset acquisitions expand resource base
The $215 million purchase represents a strategic move to consolidate control over the Caserones district. By acquiring the remaining interests from JX Advanced Metals and adding Los Helados, Lundin Mining secures long-term growth optionality in a region where it already operates. The Los Helados project is described as a large copper-gold deposit, enhancing the company’s long-term production potential without requiring new greenfield development.
Financial performance remained robust despite higher diesel prices impacting operational costs. The near-record revenue reflects the combination of elevated market prices for copper and effective cost control measures. Management noted that these factors offset the increased expenses associated with fuel and logistics during the quarter.
Full-year production targets maintained
Lundin Mining affirmed that it remains on track to meet its full-year production guidance for both copper and gold. Although weather conditions necessitated adjustments to the Caserones mine plan, the company stated that these changes did not materially alter the overall annual output expectations. The operational resilience demonstrated in the second quarter supports the company’s commitment to its stated delivery targets.
Vicuna project advances toward sanction
Significant progress was made on the Vicuna Project, a key long-term growth initiative. The company secured a long-term royalty agreement and obtained necessary infrastructure approvals, moving the project closer to a potential sanctioning decision by year-end. This development marks a critical step in transforming the project from a conceptual stage to an active development phase.
The recent Capital Markets Day highlighted multiple low-capital-intensive brownfield expansion opportunities at the Candelaria, Caserones, and Chapada operations. These expansions, combined with the Vicuna development, form the core of the company’s five-to-ten-year financial outlook. The strategy focuses on leveraging existing infrastructure to maximize returns while advancing the next generation of growth assets.
