Northern Minerals (ASX:NTU) is positioning its Browns Range project as a critical source of heavy rare earth elements, specifically dysprosium and terbium, which are essential for high-temperature magnet applications in electric vehicles and defense systems. The company’s strategy relies on exploiting a xenotime deposit in the East Kimberley region, which concentrates these scarce elements more effectively than the lighter rare earths that dominate global supply chains.
The business model differentiates Northern Minerals from competitors by focusing on grade over volume, as processing costs are driven by the tonnage of ore treated rather than the metal content. With a definitive feasibility study completed and pilot operations previously conducted, the project is among the most advanced heavy rare earth developments outside of China, aiming to fill a projected supply deficit in these strategic elements by the end of the decade.
Strategic Value of Heavy Elements
Unlike light rare earths such as neodymium, which are abundant, heavy elements are tightly controlled by China and are added in small proportions to magnets to maintain performance at elevated temperatures.
