Memory Chipmakers Extend Gains on Tight Supply and AI Demand

Micron, SanDisk, and SK Hynix continue their pre-market rally as industry leaders confirm persistent memory shortages and rising prices driven by AI data center requirements.
Memory chip equities extended their gains in Friday's pre-market trading, with Micron Technology and SK Hynix rising approximately 1% and SanDisk gaining 2%. This movement follows a significant Thursday session where Micron climbed 5.5%, SanDisk surged 6.2%, and SK Hynix advanced 4.6%. The broader market environment supported these tech stocks, as Brent crude prices dropped to roughly $102.87 per barrel and the 10-year Treasury yield fell below 5%, alleviating earlier pressure on the sector.
The rally is underpinned by concrete signals of supply constraints and pricing power. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan warned that the memory shortage could intensify next year, noting that memory prices have already increased five to seven times. These comments reinforce investor confidence in the structural tightness of the market, suggesting that current supply limitations will continue to support revenue and margins for major chipmakers like Micron and SanDisk.
SK Hynix Explores U.S. NAND Production
SK Hynix is positioning for long-term AI storage demand through its subsidiary Solidigm, which is considering constructing a NAND flash factory in the United States. This potential investment aims to reduce reliance on the company's current Dalian, China facility, its sole NAND production site. The move indicates that Solidigm expects AI data center demand to remain robust enough to justify the capital expenditure required for new capacity, a signal that resonates positively with investors in the memory sector.
SanDisk Secures Data Center Agreements
SanDisk benefits directly from the structural increase in NAND demand driven by AI inference workloads. The company has secured long-term agreements with major data-center customers, providing revenue visibility amidst tight supply conditions. J.P. Morgan analyst Harlan Sur recently resumed coverage with a Buy rating and a $2,250 price target, citing SanDisk's unique positioning to capitalize on these structural shifts. According to the TipRanks Stock Comparison Tool, SanDisk carries a Strong Buy consensus with 35.19% analyst upside.
Micron Faces Key Earnings Test
Micron Technology is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter results on September 30, serving as a critical validation of the current memory boom. Wall Street estimates anticipate earnings per share of $31.14 and revenue of $50.41 billion. TD Cowen analyst Krish Sankar reiterated a Buy rating with a $1,600 price target, while Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider maintained a Hold rating at $1,100 but expects another strong quarter due to tight supply-demand conditions. Micron currently holds a Strong Buy rating with 60.05% analyst upside.
