South Korean equities advanced nearly 2% as semiconductor leaders outperformed, driven by a rebound in global tech sentiment and easing pressure on risk assets.

The South Korean stock market posted a near 2% gain on Friday, propelled primarily by a surge in semiconductor shares. According to GN auto stocks/technology: chip stocks, this movement tracked a 3.1% increase in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index reported on the previous day. The broader rally was supported by declining oil prices and lower U.S. Treasury yields, which collectively improved investor confidence in risk assets across Asia.

Foreign investors participated actively in the session, becoming net buyers of South Korean shares worth 157.7 billion won, equivalent to approximately 113.99 million dollars. Among the 909 stocks traded, 457 advanced while 406 declined, indicating broad-based participation despite the concentration of gains in the tech sector. The South Korean won weakened slightly, closing at 1,384.1 per dollar, down 0.19% from the previous settlement of 1,381.5.

Semiconductor Shares Drive Index Performance

Samsung Electronics served as a key driver of the index advance, rising 2.28% during the session. The company’s gain aligned with the broader recovery in technology valuations seen in U.S. markets. This performance helped offset softer results in other industrial and consumer sectors, anchoring the overall market strength.

SK Hynix outperformed its larger rival, posting a 4.30% increase. This stronger gain reflected heightened sensitivity to memory chip demand cycles and the specific momentum in semiconductor trading. The differential in performance between the two major chipmakers highlighted the varying investor appetite for different segments of the technology hardware supply chain.

Diverse Sector Performance Across Seoul

While technology led the charge, other major industrial players showed mixed results. Hyundai Motor gained 1.17%, suggesting continued strength in the automotive sector. In contrast, battery maker LG Energy Solution slipped 0.55%, indicating divergent investor sentiment toward the electric vehicle supply chain components. POSCO Holdings and Samsung BioLogics also recorded minor declines of 0.31% and 0.29% respectively, while Kia Corp finished unchanged.

Monetary Policy Context Affects Rates

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% from 1.00%, marking a 31-year high for borrowing costs. This move, widely anticipated to curb inflation, provided a backdrop of tightening monetary conditions in the region. Despite this, South Korean bond yields fell, with the 10-year benchmark declining 7.3 basis points to 4.439%. The three-year yield dropped 3.5 basis points to 4.023%, reflecting a broader retreat in global yield pressures that supported equity valuations.
