Semiconductor Revenue Hits Record High on AI Memory Surge

Global chip sales surged 31.4% in Q2 2026, driven by record memory prices and AI infrastructure demand.
Global semiconductor revenue reached a record $425 billion in the second quarter of 2026, marking a 31.4% quarter-over-quarter increase. This growth rate surpasses the previous sequential record of 29.2% set in the first quarter of 2026. According to data cited by GN stocks/chips, memory components accounted for more than half of total industry revenue during this period.
The surge in sales was primarily driven by artificial intelligence demand, which reshaped production priorities for memory suppliers. This shift altered supply and demand balances, leading to higher average selling prices. Total semiconductor revenue for the first half of 2026 reached $752 billion, already exceeding the full-year totals of every previous year except 2025.
Memory chips dominate market share
Dynamic random-access memory and NAND flash memory recorded their highest sequential growth for a second quarter since tracking began. All three major memory types, including NOR chips, achieved their highest recorded quarterly revenue in Q2 2026. The dominance of memory ICs skewed overall market trends, with these components contributing significantly to the top-line growth.
Production shifts prioritizing AI-related memory chips affected supply availability for other sectors. This scarcity resulted in elevated prices across the memory segment. The record share of memory in total semiconductor revenue reflects unprecedented growth in these specific components, outpacing other parts of the industry.
Non-memory components show strong growth
Excluding memory chips, the wider semiconductor market grew by over 10% quarter-over-quarter. This figure is significantly above the typical seasonal growth of just over 3% for second quarters. Microprocessor revenue increased by 16% in Q2 2026, well above its seasonal norm of 1%, as these components play an increasing role in AI infrastructure.
Forecast exceeds previous annual records
Omdia forecasts that semiconductor revenue will surpass $500 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This projection would take total revenue for the first three quarters of 2026 above $1.25 trillion. Such a total would be 50% higher than the entire semiconductor revenue recorded for the whole of 2025.
