Descartes Q2 Revenue Hits Record High Amid Freight Headwinds

Descartes Systems Group reported record revenue and margins for Q2 FY2027, driven by strong services demand despite geopolitical disruptions in global shipping.
Descartes Systems Group reported total revenue of $193.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, marking a 15% increase over the prior year. This growth was primarily fueled by services revenue, which reached $180.5 million and accounted for 93% of the total. The company posted net income of $48.5 million, a 34% jump from $36.2 million in the same period last year, reflecting effective cost control alongside expanded sales.
Adjusted EBITDA climbed 20% to $89.8 million, achieving a record margin of 46%. Management attributed this efficiency to organic services growth, which stood at 9% excluding acquisition and foreign exchange effects. Operating cash flow also surged 40% to $75.1 million, supported by robust collections and operational discipline, while the company maintained a debt-free balance sheet with $377 million in cash.
Geopolitical Disruptions Drive Trade Demand
CEO Edward J. Ryan noted that the conflict in Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, creating volatility in shipping rates and logistics reliability. Despite these headwinds, demand for Descartes’ Global Trade Intelligence solutions increased significantly. Shippers sought assistance navigating high tariffs and complex duty calculations, turning geopolitical uncertainty into a driver for the company’s trade compliance software.
The company also benefited from rising compliance burdens. New regulations from China aimed at countering extraterritorial jurisdiction created conflicting requirements for international shippers. Additionally, a US Supreme Court ruling suggesting freight broker liability for carrier negligence is increasing pressure for auditable diligence. These factors collectively expanded the addressable market for Descartes’ risk management and trade visibility tools.
Capital Allocation and Acquisition Strategy
Descartes deployed $30 million for two acquisitions during the quarter, including Idelic, a provider of AI-powered fleet safety and driver management technologies. This move addresses labor shortages exacerbated by stricter US driver qualification regulations. The company also executed $21 million in share buybacks in the first quarter and purchased an additional 197,000 shares between May 1 and June 2.
Capital expenditures remained low at $2.6 million for the quarter, with management projecting total annual spending between $4 million and $6 million. This conservative capex approach supports the high free cash flow generation that funds its ongoing buyback program and strategic acquisitions, reinforcing the company’s financial flexibility.
Forward Guidance and Expense Outlook
For the upcoming period, management provided a baseline revenue guidance of $169 million and adjusted EBITDA of $66.5 million, representing a 39% margin calibration. These figures are based on exchange rates as of May 1, 2026. The company expects a full-year tax rate between 25% and 30%, with the quarterly rate at 26%.
Looking ahead, amortization expenses are projected to reach $53.5 million for the remainder of the fiscal year, while stock-based compensation is estimated at $24 million. Additionally, $9 million in contingent earn-out payments are expected. These recurring expense items will impact net income but are largely non-cash or predictable, allowing for stable cash flow planning.
