Zscaler trades at 9.3 times sales, a premium to the S&P 500, while guiding for a sharp deceleration to 17% growth in fiscal 2027.

Zscaler (ZS) shares have climbed 48% over the past three months, positioning the stock at approximately $190 per share. This price level represents a valuation of 9.3 times trailing sales, significantly higher than the 3.2 times multiple observed for the S&P 500. Despite this recent momentum, the stock remains 43% below its 52-week high, reflecting market hesitation regarding the sustainability of its growth trajectory.

The core investment debate centers on the divergence between reported performance and future expectations. Zscaler delivered 25% revenue growth in fiscal 2026, yet management has guided for a slower expansion of 16.6% to 17.5% for fiscal 2027. This deceleration is the primary factor investors must weigh against the company's current premium valuation.

Operational Drags Slow Revenue Pace

Management identifies specific internal factors contributing to the slower guidance. Two senior sales leaders departed the company, creating a transition period expected to extend through the first half of fiscal 2027. Additionally, the Red Canary managed detection and response business, acquired by Zscaler, experienced elevated churn in fiscal 2026. Management expects this churn to continue during renewal cycles, limiting the net new annual recurring revenue contribution from that segment.

Excluding Red Canary, net new ARR grew 17% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. This marks an acceleration from 7% growth in fiscal 2025 and 10% in the first half of fiscal 2026. However, implied growth from the fiscal 2027 midpoint guide is approximately 4%, a gap management attributes to the sales leadership transition and the pace of SecOps product uptake.

AI Products Offer Potential Upside

Zscaler is leveraging new AI-focused products to drive future growth. Bookings for security for AI solutions rose more than 50% sequentially in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. New offerings, including Zero Trust Exchange for agents, Endpoint AI Security, and the Agentic SecOps product launched in September, are expected to scale or begin contributing to revenue in the second half of fiscal 2027.

Management has not explicitly included Security for AI contributions in the fiscal 2027 outlook, despite labeling AI as its largest historical tailwind. This suggests the current guide may represent a floor, with AI products providing potential upside, or that fiscal 2027 performance depends heavily on the simultaneous success of these new products and the completion of the sales transition.

Valuation Risk Outweighs Operational Concerns

Zscaler's operational fundamentals remain resilient. Although the company reports an operating margin of -3.6% compared to the S&P 500 average of 18.6%, it converts 33.7% of revenue into operating cash flow, exceeding the market average of 21.8%. This strong cash generation capability ensures that a slower growth year does not threaten the company's financial stability.

The primary risk lies in the stock's multiple rather than its business performance. During the 2022 inflation shock, Zscaler shares fell 58%, while the S&P 500 declined by 24%. As noted in reports from GN stocks/sp500, this historical sensitivity indicates that the current premium valuation leaves the stock vulnerable to significant repricing if growth expectations are not met, independent of underlying business health.
