Anthropic's anticipated mid-October listing faces a 12-month wait for S&P 500 inclusion, posing near-term risks to AI-driven index performance.

Anthropic plans to launch its initial public offering no earlier than mid-October, seeking a valuation of at least $2 trillion. This target would surpass Space Exploration Technologies as the largest IPO in history. The S&P 500 index will react to this event based on market appetite for artificial intelligence exposure, although index funds cannot purchase the stock immediately due to strict eligibility rules.

S&P Dow Jones Indices recently declined to loosen its criteria for mega-cap listings, maintaining a requirement for 12 months of public trading. Additionally, companies must have at least 10% of shares publicly held and report positive earnings under GAAP. Consequently, Anthropic’s earliest entry into the S&P 500 is late 2027, meaning index holders will not receive direct exposure for over a year.

Existing stakes provide indirect exposure

Two of the S&P 500’s largest constituents already hold significant positions in Anthropic. Amazon reported $16.8 billion in pretax gains on its stake during the first quarter of 2026. Alphabet also maintains an investment in the company. Therefore, a successful debut for Anthropic could directly boost the earnings and valuations of these established index members, providing immediate indirect exposure for S&P 500 fund investors.

Historical data suggests post-IPO underperformance

Financial data indicates that the initial hype often fades. Across 9,343 U.S. IPOs from 1980 to 2025, the average first-day gain was 19%. However, IPOs issued between 2012 and 2024 underperformed the broader market by 25.5% over the subsequent three years. SpaceX’s June 2026 listing illustrates this volatility, with the stock price jumping from $135 to $225.64 before falling to $104.83, highlighting the risks for early shareholders.

AI sector concentration amplifies index risk

AI stocks accounted for more than 80% of the S&P 500’s gains through mid-May 2026, according to Jefferies. A lukewarm reception for Anthropic’s IPO could signal fading investor appetite for the sector. Since AI-heavy index funds rely on this growth, a negative reaction to the year’s largest offering would likely exert downward pressure on the overall S&P 500 performance in the near term.
