Mega-Cap Tech Underperforms as Market Rotation Accelerates

Investors are rotating out of dominant tech names into semiconductors and value stocks, driven by shifting interest rate expectations and a search for the next AI beneficiaries.
The dominance of the Magnificent Seven tech giants over the S&P 500 has waned significantly this year. According to data cited by GN stocks/sp500, the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF has returned 6% year-to-date, lagging behind the 12% gain of the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF and the 27% surge of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF. This divergence marks a clear break from the previous trend where a handful of large-cap names drove broad index performance, signaling a broader dispersion of returns across the market.
The primary driver of this rotation is investor repositioning within the artificial intelligence trade. Capital is flowing away from the earliest mega-cap winners toward semiconductor manufacturers like Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices, and Intel, which are producing the core hardware for AI infrastructure. Memory producers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also saw strong performance earlier in the year. More recently, cybersecurity firms have attracted attention as the market begins to price in potential slowdowns in AI development, shifting focus to companies that manage the risks associated with this technology.
Interest Rate Expectations Reshape Valuations
A second critical factor is the shift in interest rate outlooks. At the start of the year, market consensus anticipated rate cuts, which typically support high-valuation growth stocks. That expectation has reversed, with forecasts now suggesting multiple rate hikes within the next six to 12 months. Higher interest rates reduce the present value of future cash flows, making investors less willing to pay premium multiples for expensive tech names. Consequently, the Magnificent Seven have suffered as capital rotates toward value stocks that are less sensitive to discount rate changes.
This macroeconomic shift has created a distinct separation between growth and value performance. The high valuation multiples that sustained mega-cap tech stocks during the rate-cutting expectation phase are now under pressure. As the cost of capital rises, the financial rationale for concentrating portfolios in a small number of high-growth names weakens, prompting a structural rebalancing across sectors and market capitalizations.
