Piper Sandler Cautions on Equity Exposure Amid Breadth Deterioration

Piper Sandler recommends waiting for improved market participation before increasing equity exposure, citing divergent sector performance and rising Treasury yields.
Piper Sandler advises caution on increasing equity exposure, pointing to deteriorating intermediate-term market breadth and momentum. This guidance was issued despite recent gains in specific US sectors, as the firm identified a lack of broad participation across the overall market. The S&P 500 declined 0.48% on Tuesday, contrasting with a 0.04% gain for its equal-weighted counterpart. This divergence indicates that losses were concentrated in large-cap stocks rather than distributed evenly across the index, a signal the firm interprets as a warning against broadening positions.
Sector performance showed significant divergence during the recent trading session. The communications sector advanced 2.2%, moving above resistance at its 200-day moving average. In technology, the SMH semiconductor exchange-traded fund fell 4.75% due to AI safety warnings impacting infrastructure companies. Conversely, software stocks gained 5% and cybersecurity shares rose 6%, with CrowdStrike reaching a record high. These mixed results underscore the fragmented nature of current market activity, where strong performance in select areas does not translate to overall market health.
Breadth Indicators Signal Sell Positions
Piper Sandler’s technical analysis highlights deterioration in broader market participation metrics. The firm’s 26-Week New Highs and 40-Week Technique indicators are both signaling sell positions. Additionally, their MACE trend analysis shows that more stocks are experiencing weekly downtrends than uptrends. The proportion of market groups in defined uptrends declined to 43% last week from 53% previously. These structural shifts suggest that the underlying momentum supporting recent gains is weakening, even if headline indices remain stable.
External macroeconomic factors are further complicating the equity outlook. The US 10-year Treasury yield briefly exceeded 5.0%, while crude oil approached $105 per barrel before settling near $101.50. Piper Sandler notes that a sustained increase in Treasury yields towards 5.2% and 5.31% could pressure equity valuation multiples. The firm also identifies $106 as a critical technical threshold for crude oil, with a move above this level potentially targeting $111. These variables create a risk environment that favors defensive positioning over aggressive accumulation.
Technical Support Levels Remain Critical
Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq currently trade near support levels corresponding to their respective 50-day moving averages. Piper Sandler recommends waiting for an improvement in market participation before increasing equity exposure. The firm cites weakening breadth indicators, AI safety warnings, and the recent increase in Treasury yields associated with higher oil prices as key constraints. According to Yahoo Finance, this strategy prioritizes capital preservation until broader market confidence is restored, avoiding the risks associated with catching a falling knife in a fragmented market.
