SpaceX's index share more than doubles to 2.82%, triggering an estimated $15.5 billion to $22 billion in passive fund buying.

Key points

  • SpaceX's Nasdaq-100 weighting increased to 2.82% from 1.28% during the quarterly index rebalance.
  • The rebalance is estimated to drive $15.5 billion to $22 billion in passive buying across Nasdaq-linked funds.
  • xAI released Grok 4.7, an updated AI model with improved safety features and unchanged token pricing.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. shares remained stable on Monday as the company’s weight in the Nasdaq-100 index more than doubled during the quarterly rebalance. The new allocation stands at 2.82%, up from the previous 1.28%, a shift driven by the firm’s market capitalization exceeding $2 trillion despite its earlier limited float following the July IPO.

This significant increase in index exposure mandates substantial buying from passive investment vehicles. According to Bloomberg, the rebalance is expected to generate between $15.5 billion and $22 billion in total passive purchases across QQQ, leveraged, and inverse Nasdaq-linked products, as funds adjust their holdings to match the new weighting.

Index Rebalance Drives Passive Buying

SpaceX currently ranks as the seventh-largest company in the Nasdaq-100 by market value. However, its index weighting had previously lagged behind this ranking because the company’s free float remained thin after its initial public offering. The recent adjustment corrects this discrepancy, forcing index-tracking funds to acquire additional shares to maintain portfolio alignment.

The financial impact of this shift is substantial for the broader market ecosystem. With the new weighting derived from Friday’s closing prices, the mandatory inflow of capital represents a significant liquidity event for the stock. This passive demand provides a structural support mechanism for the shares, independent of active trading sentiment or short-term momentum.

xAI Launches Grok 4.7 Model

Separately, xAI, the artificial intelligence unit integrated into SpaceX’s operations this year, released Grok 4.7. The company describes the new model as its top performer for software development and general knowledge tasks. It utilizes a larger foundation model and underwent an extended reinforcement-learning training cycle focused on lengthy, multi-hour problems to improve self-checking and context handling.

The release includes a rebuilt safety framework designed to resist jailbreak attempts while minimizing refusals of harmless requests. Pricing remains unchanged from the previous generation at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. The model is currently live on the Grok API, Cursor, and Grok Build, marking a significant update to the company’s AI infrastructure.

Launch Schedule Remains Active

SpaceX’s operational tempo continues with a busy launch schedule. The company recently completed a Starlink mission using a Falcon 9 rocket from California over the weekend. Looking ahead, the USSF-385 mission is scheduled for Friday, September 26, with a launch window from 7:56 to 10:56 a.m. ET from the same California site.

The upcoming mission targets a droneship landing for the booster, consistent with recent Falcon 9 operations. As of Monday, SpaceX stock, trading under the ticker SPCX, edged down 0.48% to $151.97, according to Benzinga Pro data. The share price held steady despite the significant index rebalance occurring during the same period.
