Vistra Corp. reported a 6.7% drop in Q2 net income to $305 million, driven by unrealized commodity hedge losses and rising operating costs, despite a 31% increase in adjusted EBITDA.

Vistra Corp. (VST) reported second-quarter 2026 net income of $305 million, marking a 6.7% year-over-year decline. The drop was primarily attributable to a $472 million unrealized loss on commodity hedges, which are expected to settle in future periods. According to data from GN stocks/nasdaq, the company’s operating expenses rose 16.4% to $853 million, while interest expenses and related charges increased by 3% to $312 million, further compressing margins.

Despite the bottom-line decline, Vistra’s adjusted EBITDA expanded 31% to $1.77 billion. This improvement was driven by stronger realized energy and capacity prices, along with contributions from the company’s Lotus power plants. However, investor sentiment remains pressured by volatility in hedging losses and power prices that currently sit below the levels required to support adequate returns on new generation investments.

Stock Lags Nasdaq Composite Gains

Vistra shares have underperformed the broader market significantly. The stock is down 8.5% year-to-date, compared to a 13.6% gain for the Nasdaq Composite. Over the past 52 weeks, VST has fallen 27.7%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 19.8%. The company’s shares currently trade below both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages, a trend that has persisted since last year.

Vistra’s 52-week high was $219.82, from which the stock has since decreased by 32.3%. In a direct comparison with peer Constellation Energy Corporation (CEG), Vistra has also lagged on a year-to-date basis. While CEG shares declined 19.1% year-to-date, Vistra’s 8.5% drop represents a less severe short-term decline, though Vistra’s 52-week loss of 27.7% exceeds CEG’s 10.1% decline over the same period.

Diversified Portfolio Supports Generation Capacity

With a market capitalization of $49.4 billion, Vistra operates as a large-cap integrated electricity and power generation company. The firm maintains a diverse generation portfolio spanning natural gas, nuclear, coal, solar, and battery energy storage. This mix is complemented by a retail business focused on providing reliable and affordable energy to customers, businesses, and communities across the United States.

The company’s strategy emphasizes reliability and sustainability within its generation mix. The Lotus plants, which contributed to the recent EBITDA growth, exemplify the company’s expansion into newer energy infrastructure. Analysts maintain a "Strong Buy" consensus rating from 17 firms, citing the long-term value of the company’s integrated assets despite near-term pricing pressures.
