According to a new survey by YouGov, the share of adults who view AI risks as very serious jumped to 42%, up from 35% in late August. This shift indicates a growing perception that the technology poses a tangible threat to safety and stability.
Despite this rising anxiety, a majority of Americans still hold a positive outlook on the technology's potential. Specifically, 47% of respondents believe AI will deliver many positive benefits, a figure that exceeds the 31% who anticipate no significant advantage. The data presents a complex picture where high expectations for progress coexist with deepening fears about loss of control.
Political Divide in AI Risk Perception
Political affiliation strongly influences how Americans assess AI dangers. Democrats show the highest level of concern, with 53% stating that AI risks are very serious. In contrast, only 29% of Republicans share this view. The gap is particularly evident among Republican supporters of the MAGA movement, where just 23% consider the risks very serious, compared to 44% of non-MAGA Republicans.
The recent increase in overall concern is driven primarily by Democrats and Independents. Among Democrats, the share viewing risks as very serious rose from 39% to 53% in a single month. Independents also saw a shift, with their concern level climbing from 38% to 45%. Republican sentiment remained relatively stable, fluctuating only slightly from 27% to 29% during the same period.
Expectations for Health and Productivity Gains
When asked to describe expected benefits in their own words, Americans frequently cited medical advancements and increased productivity. Scientific progress and technological improvements also ranked highly among anticipated positives. These optimistic views persist even among groups that express significant worry about the technology's darker implications.
However, the relationship between risk perception and benefit expectations is not uniform. Among those who consider AI risks very serious, a majority of 53% believe the technology will not have many positive benefits. This stands in contrast to those with lower anxiety levels, such as the 78% of people who view risks as not serious, who overwhelmingly expect positive outcomes.
Trust in Political Parties Over AI
Voters generally trust Democrats more than Republicans to manage AI risks. Overall, 37% of Americans prefer the Democratic party for this role, while 31% favor the Republicans. This preference is stronger among likely voters, where 47% support Democrats compared to 33% who back Republicans. The majority of MAGA Republicans, however, overwhelmingly trust their own party, with 87% expressing that confidence.
