A Durham-based firm won top honors at a major tech hackathon by building a system that automates complex tax filings, drastically reducing costs for online sellers.

A team from Avalara secured both the Overall and Spirit Awards at the ninth annual North America Agentic AI Hackathon in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event, hosted by Vista Equity Partners, required participants to build fully functional applications using autonomous AI agents within a strict 24-hour window. Avalara’s solution focused on simplifying the process of filing Value Added Tax returns for online sellers, a task that is typically labor-intensive and error-prone.

The winning system uses a network of coordinated agents to compile, validate, and reconcile tax data. According to the company, this approach could reduce filing costs by up to 320 times compared to traditional manual processing. The project also demonstrated a commitment to safety by requiring human approval before any return is officially submitted, balancing automation with oversight.

Automating Complex Tax Compliance

Global tax compliance involves navigating a maze of regulations that vary by region. Avalara’s platform, which processes over 54 billion transactions annually, leverages its extensive library of tax content to drive these AI agents. By automating end-to-end compliance tasks, from calculating taxes to managing exemption certificates, the firm aims to provide greater precision for businesses dealing with cross-border sales.

The hackathon entry specifically targeted the pain points of VAT filing. Instead of relying on manual entry and review, the software uses deterministic tax logic to ensure accuracy. This shift from manual processing to agent-driven workflows represents a significant step in applying artificial intelligence to financial regulatory tasks.

Teamwork and Global Innovation

The award recognized not just the technical outcome but the collaborative effort behind it. The Spirit Award is given for enthusiasm and teamwork during the intense competition. The Avalara team included engineers and product managers from various departments, highlighting a cross-functional approach to problem-solving. This collaborative spirit was further showcased by other team members participating in a global hackathon in Bangalore, India.

Denis Gulsen, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Avalara, noted that the achievement reflects the company’s ability to solve difficult problems quickly. The win underscores a broader trend in the tech industry where AI agents are moving beyond simple chatbots to perform complex, multi-step business processes. As reported by GN technics/ai (en-US), this development signals a maturing phase for agentic AI applications in the enterprise sector.

The Trade-Off of Automation

While the cost savings are substantial, the reliance on automated systems for regulatory filings introduces new responsibilities. The requirement for mandatory human approval before submission is a critical safeguard against algorithmic errors. However, it also means that the process is not entirely hands-off, requiring staff to remain engaged in the final stages of the workflow. This hybrid model aims to capture the efficiency of AI while maintaining the accountability necessary for financial compliance.
