Dudas notes that the value of this funding lies in empowering students to critically question a rapidly changing field. Rather than just learning how to use AI, students are learning how to evaluate the boundaries of its use, ensuring that technological progress does not outpace ethical consideration.

Summer Fellows Bridge Technical and Human Needs

The Hastings Summer Fellowship took a different approach by placing five students under faculty mentorship for eight weeks. The fellows applied their skills to projects that blend technical proficiency with social utility. One fellow designed an anti-procrastination app, while another created a public interface for tracking greenhouse gas emissions. These projects demonstrate that AI is not inherently opposed to the humanities; instead, it can be a tool for enhancing human creativity and addressing practical societal challenges.

Camily Guimarães Carvalho, a fellow working with an economics professor, focused on improving access to scholarly resources. She also built a database for low-income Brazilian students, using AI to automatically update career opportunities and distribute newsletters. This work challenges the common narrative that AI is only for elite tech hubs. Instead, it shows how the technology can be adapted to serve specific, underserved communities, provided there is a clear understanding of the tool's limitations and the context in which it is deployed.

Repositioning Liberal Arts in Tech
