California launches AI assistant to simplify state services
Governor Gavin Newsom has introduced AskCA, an artificial intelligence tool designed to help residents navigate the complex landscape of state and local government services without needing to become experts in bureaucracy.
The new platform aims to act as a single point of entry for Californians who are often confused by the sheer number of state agencies and departments. According to the governor’s office, the goal is to streamline the process of finding answers, making government more efficient and accessible. The initiative stems from an executive order issued in March and represents a shift toward using advanced technology to meet residents where they are, rather than expecting them to learn how to navigate government websites.
Pilot program begins next month
The tool is not yet available to the general public. Instead, it will launch as a beta test on October 1, with the Office of Data and Innovation seeking volunteers aged 18 and older to participate. These users will help refine the system by providing feedback that informs the accuracy of the AI responses. State officials noted that the prototype has already been tested with various groups, including wildfire survivors, job seekers, and more than 100 general users, to ensure it handles real-world scenarios effectively.
Built on third-party technology
AskCA is powered by Anthropic’s Claude model, a partnership that was announced in July. Security support for the project is provided by the California Department of Technology. This reliance on external AI infrastructure raises questions about data privacy and the specific safeguards in place, although the governor’s office emphasizes that the tool is designed to be secure and responsible. The collaboration highlights California’s effort to integrate private sector AI capabilities into public service delivery.
Early impact on job seekers
Before the full trial begins, the technology will be deployed in a specific sector. On September 30, the California Department of Human Resources will use the AI engine to launch a job-skills-matching feature on CalCareers.ca.gov. This tool is intended to help job seekers understand how their previous experience aligns with opportunities in state service. By automating this matching process, the state hopes to make the hiring platform more accessible and supportive for those looking to work for the government.
