A Chicago resident has credited artificial intelligence tools with helping her identify and locate a man she alleges assaulted her this summer. Zoe Threlkeld said she used ChatGPT to analyze a photograph she had of the suspect, Isaiah Del Toro, which allowed her to pinpoint his address before contacting law enforcement. The tool helped her extract details from a background image in a social media profile, turning a blurry memory into concrete evidence for police.

Threlkeld met Del Toro at a bar in the River North neighborhood in June and later invited him to her apartment. According to her account, he refused to leave when asked and attacked her, stealing her phone and striking her with a kitchen pot. She sustained injuries requiring staples and was left without her personal devices. With only his nickname and a familiar Facebook profile picture to go on, she turned to digital tools to find his full identity and location.

Decoding images for police leads

Threlkeld explained that she uploaded a photo of Del Toro to ChatGPT, specifically focusing on the background of the image. The picture showed a brownstone building with a visible house number. She asked the AI to identify the location, and the system provided the address. This information gave her the specific details needed to report the incident effectively. When she arrived at the police station, she had his full name, phone number, and home address, which expedited the investigation.

Del Toro has since been arrested and charged with aggravated battery, robbery, and theft. Court documents indicate he is currently in custody and is scheduled to return to court in October. Threlkeld expressed relief that he remains detained, emphasizing that the use of modern technology played a crucial role in his apprehension. The case highlights a shift in how victims might use accessible digital tools to gather evidence in the immediate aftermath of a crime.

Experts weigh the risks and benefits

Security experts acknowledge the dual nature of such capabilities.
