DHS Launches Prize Competition for AI Biothreat Detection

The Department of Homeland Security is offering nearly one million dollars to developers who can build AI tools to identify biological threats from environmental data, with a submission deadline in October.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate has opened a new competition called Ready, Set…ID the Biothreat. The initiative offers a total of $999,990 in prizes to U.S. innovators, companies, and academic institutions that can develop artificial intelligence algorithms to detect biological threats. The goal is to create tools that can quickly distinguish dangerous biological signals from harmless background noise in environmental metagenomic datasets.

Emergency responders need to understand why the AI flagged a specific risk, not just that a risk exists. Competition structure and eligibility rules
The contest is divided into three distinct stages: proposal evaluation, prototype development, and final blinded validation. This phased approach allows judges to screen ideas early and test the most promising algorithms under strict conditions. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens aged 18 and older, domestic businesses, academic institutions, and national laboratories. All entries must be submitted by the October 14 deadline.
