Nvidia’s latest rendering feature delivers stunning visuals but imposes a severe performance penalty that even its own frame generation tools cannot fully offset.

Nvidia has released DLSS 5, a neural rendering technology that significantly enhances visual depth and lighting in games. While the graphical improvements are widely praised as subtle and tasteful, the cost to performance is substantial. For many high-end graphics card owners, the feature currently sacrifices more than half of their available frame rates to achieve these visual gains.

The situation is particularly concerning because Nvidia’s standard solution for low frame rates, Frame Generation, does not appear to fully compensate for the loss. Additionally, the technology demands significantly more power from the hardware, raising concerns about heat and energy efficiency that go beyond simple speed metrics.

Flagship hardware struggles with the new standard

Early benchmarks from NBA 2K27, the first title to officially support the technology, show a drastic drop in performance. On the RTX 5090, frame rates fell from 128.4 to 62.7 at 4K resolution. This represents a 51 percent loss of speed on the fastest consumer graphics card currently available. The RTX 5080 fared even worse, dropping below the generally accepted 60 frames per second threshold.

According to XDA Developers, this suggests that the performance hit is not just about raw processing power but also involves fixed costs related to resolution. Even the entry-level Blackwell cards experience significant drops, though they are slightly less severe than the flagship models. This indicates a fundamental structural inefficiency in how the feature is currently implemented.

Power consumption rises sharply with visual quality

The performance penalty comes with a tangible increase in energy usage. Testing by Tom's Hardware revealed that enabling this neural rendering pass can cause power draw to jump by over 50 percent in some cases. In Hogwarts Legacy, one high-end card saw its consumption rise from 480 watts to 720 watts, a massive increase that puts additional strain on power supplies and cooling systems.

This surge in power leads to higher temperatures, which can throttle performance further. While some tests suggest that official developer implementations might be more efficient than early mods, the current data points to a significant trade-off. Users are paying in both speed and electricity for the improved visual atmosphere.

Frame generation fails to close the gap

Nvidia typically relies on Frame Generation to boost frame counts by inserting synthetic frames. However, this technique does not address the underlying latency issues caused by the heavy processing load of DLSS 5. Even if the frame rate number looks better, the time it takes for the GPU to process each original frame remains high, resulting in a less responsive gaming experience.

This creates a difficult choice for enthusiasts: accept a slower, power-hungry version of the game for better visuals, or stick to traditional rendering methods for smoother performance. Until these overhead costs are reduced, the feature remains a niche option for those with top-tier hardware who prioritize looks over speed.
