Hawaii colleges launch new AI and data science training

A $657,000 federal grant is funding a new initiative to integrate practical AI skills into associate degree programs at two Hawaii community colleges, aiming to better prepare students for a data-driven job market.

At least 150 students at Kapiʻolani Community College and the University of Hawaii Maui College will soon begin applying artificial intelligence and data science concepts to real-world problems. The two institutions have secured a $657,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to overhaul their information technology curricula, focusing on practical application rather than just theoretical knowledge.

This integration is critical for keeping the program accessible and manageable for students who are often balancing work and study.

Cross-campus collaboration and industry ties

The project fosters a new level of cooperation between the Oahu and Maui campuses. Students from both locations will participate in annual showcases and collaborative learning opportunities, allowing them to exchange ideas and methods.
