Indonesia Secures Massive Funding for Regional AI Computing Hub

A new 100-megawatt data center in Indonesia aims to reduce regional dependence on foreign AI servers, backed by a $3.1 billion loan from major international banks.
Zankore has secured a US$3.1 billion senior term loan to build a 100-megawatt AI infrastructure facility in Indonesia. This project, reported by GN technics/cloud (en-US), marks one of the largest AI infrastructure financings in Asia. The facility is designed to host NVIDIA-powered GPU clusters for training and running artificial intelligence models locally.
The initiative aims to position Indonesia as a key hub for AI computing in Southeast Asia. By building local capacity, the company hopes to reduce the region's reliance on data centers located overseas. This shift is intended to lower latency for local users and keep sensitive data within regional borders, supporting a more autonomous digital economy.
Local Data Centers Reduce Latency
Currently, many companies in Southeast Asia rely on cloud computing resources located in other parts of Asia or globally. This distance creates latency, or delay, which can slow down real-time AI applications. By placing high-performance computing hardware in Indonesia, Zankore allows businesses to process data closer to where it is generated. This is particularly important for industries like finance and logistics, where speed is critical.
The platform will support both model training and inference, which is the process of running AI models to generate answers. Localizing these capabilities means that startups and enterprises in the region can access advanced computing power without paying for cross-border data transfer. This infrastructure is built to handle the heavy workloads required for modern agentic AI systems that operate autonomously.
Bank Consortium Backs the Project
The financing package involves a consortium of major financial institutions, including Citi, ING, and United Overseas Bank. Citi acted as the exclusive debt adviser for the deal. The involvement of these global banks signals strong confidence in the commercial viability of AI infrastructure in the region. It also highlights the growing recognition that significant capital is required to build the physical hardware needed for the next generation of AI.
Trade-offs of Massive Infrastructure
While the project promises greater access to AI, it comes with significant energy and financial commitments. The initial 100-megawatt capacity is a substantial load on the local power grid, requiring robust energy management strategies. Additionally, the revenue-sharing model means that Zankore’s financial stability is closely tied to its ability to attract and retain customers for its GPU services. If demand does not scale as predicted, the debt burden could become a challenge.
