Millennials Dominate High-Paying AI Roles Amid Gender Gap

New data reveals that workers aged 30 to 45 are securing the majority of senior artificial intelligence positions with six-figure salaries. However, this financial windfall is not evenly distributed, with significant disparities in gender and educational background persisting across the industry.
As the technology sector grapples with the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, a distinct demographic is emerging as the primary beneficiary of the boom. Recent analysis from LinkedIn indicates that millennials, defined here as those between the ages of 30 and 45, account for 60 percent of new hires in the role of head of AI. These professionals are commanding a median salary of $236,000, a figure that significantly outpaces the broader tech labor market. The data suggests that this generation is leveraging their experience to secure the most lucrative and senior positions available in the field.
While the salary figures are attractive, the composition of these hires reveals a stark imbalance. Men hold the vast majority of these high-level positions, with women representing only 20 percent of new head of AI hires. This disparity extends to other leadership tiers, where female representation drops to 26 percent for director roles and 18 percent for technical staff positions. The concentration of power and compensation among male millennials highlights a significant barrier to entry for women seeking to advance into the top echelons of the AI industry.
Younger Workers Find Entry Points
In contrast to the senior roles dominated by millennials, Generation Z is finding opportunities in entry-level technical positions. Despite facing the worst entry-level job market in decades, younger workers are capturing the majority of new hires for roles such as forward deployed engineer and AI engineer. These positions offer median salaries of $199,000 and $166,000, respectively. For a generation accustomed to high unemployment rates and stagnant wages, these roles represent a viable pathway into the tech industry, offering pay that is more than double the median for non-AI roles.
Education Remains a Key Barrier
Even as some major technology companies have begun to relax their hiring criteria, formal education continues to serve as a significant gatekeeper in the AI sector. Over 95 percent of new hires for senior AI roles hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. The data indicates that possessing such qualifications correlates with a median pay increase of approximately $52,000. Consequently, workers without four-year degrees are often relegated to lower-paying positions with lower barriers to entry, such as data annotation, limiting their earning potential and career progression.
The report concludes that while AI is often presented as a democratizing force in the workplace, the current labor market remains highly stratified. Access to the highest-paying roles is increasingly concentrated among those with higher levels of formal education and, disproportionately, among men. This structural inequality suggests that the benefits of the AI boom are not being shared broadly, leaving women and less-educated workers at a distinct disadvantage in a rapidly evolving job market.
