Samsung Makes Its Lightest Foldable Phone Yet

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8, a device that weighs just 201 grams. This marks a significant shift in foldable technology, making the phone lighter than many traditional bar-style smartphones.
Samsung Electronics has released the Galaxy Z Fold8, officially positioning it as the world’s lightest foldable smartphone at 201 grams. This device represents a 52-gram reduction from the previous generation, the Galaxy Z Fold5, which weighed 253 grams. The move addresses a long-standing consumer hesitation regarding the bulk of foldable devices, aiming to make the form factor more practical for daily carry without sacrificing the large-screen experience.

The development team set an ambitious target to beat the weight of Samsung’s own flagship bar phone, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which stands at 218 grams. By achieving a weight of 201 grams, the new Foldable undercuts even the standard heavy flagship, signaling that the trade-off between size and portability is finally being resolved in favor of users.
Engineering Precision Drives Weight Reduction
Achieving this weight required a complete reimagining of the device’s internal architecture. Engineers could not simply swap out heavy parts; they had to revisit hundreds of components at the fraction-of-a-gram level. The core innovation lies in a new material called Flex Titanium, which uses a titanium alloy film for the display. This film is incredibly thin, measuring only tens of micrometers, roughly one-third the width of a human hair. This extreme thinness allows the screen to be flexible while maintaining the necessary structural integrity.
The metal support plate behind the display also underwent significant refinement. Some sections are machined to a thickness of just 0.2 millimeters, with the thinnest parts reaching 0.15 millimeters. At this scale, standard manufacturing risks bending or warping the metal, which would ruin the screen’s flatness. Samsung solved this by breaking the machining process into multiple stages, carefully controlling cooling and tooling to ensure the plate remains perfectly flat despite its extreme thinness.
Balancing Durability and Daily Use
The hinge mechanism, which bears the mechanical stress of folding, required similar precision. It must manage the forces exerted during every open-and-close cycle while fitting into a thinner chassis. This level of engineering ensures that the device does not feel fragile despite its reduced mass. The focus on these specific components highlights that the lightness is not achieved by cutting corners on quality, but by advancing fundamental foldable technologies and material science.
Consumer surveys have consistently shown that weight and bulk are top deterrents for non-buyers of foldable phones.
