North Carolina universities launch shared AI literacy course

A new free module series is rolling out across the UNC system to help students understand and responsibly use generative AI tools in their studies and future careers.

Students at all 17 universities within the University of North Carolina system now have access to a standardized course on artificial intelligence. The initiative, titled “Foundational Generative AI Literacy and Responsible Use,” aims to provide a common baseline of knowledge for everyone from humanities majors to engineering students. It officially launched last spring but is being fully integrated into fall schedules after a period of testing and refinement.

The course was developed by a team of 15 faculty members who spent six weeks designing the curriculum. According to Meghan Manfra, the UNC Faculty Director of AI Literacy, the modules are freely available to students. They cover the basics of how generative AI works, its potential benefits, and its significant drawbacks. The goal is to move beyond simple tool usage and focus on ethical and responsible application within specific academic disciplines.

Tailored modules for different fields

Rather than applying a single generic lesson to every student, the course structure allows for customization. Different modules are tailored to meet the needs of various stakeholders and majors. This approach recognizes that a law student’s interaction with AI tools differs significantly from that of a graphic design major. Manfra notes that this thoughtful engagement helps address the specific workflows and ethical considerations relevant to each field.

Integration into university systems

The technical implementation gives individual universities considerable leeway. Each campus has access to the course material through its existing learning management system. This means the content is embedded in the platforms students already use daily, rather than requiring separate logins or external platforms. UNC System President Peter Hans described this as a significant milestone in preparing students to engage thoughtfully with the technology.

Trade-offs in standardized education
