UVA Students Bridge the AI Gap for Small Businesses

A new university program pairs students with local firms to implement practical AI tools, addressing a critical skills shortage in the workforce.
Students at the University of Virginia are stepping into a new role as technical advisors for small businesses across the state. Through the AI4VA program, learners are matched with organizations that recognize the potential of artificial intelligence but lack the internal expertise or budget to implement it. This initiative represents a shift from theoretical classroom learning to applied, real-world problem solving, directly connecting academic resources with local economic needs.
The program was designed in response to a clear market signal: a growing demand for AI literacy among entry-level workers. According to data cited by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, more than one-third of new positions now require some level of AI competence. By engaging with actual business cases, students gain the specific, applied skills that employers are actively seeking, while the businesses receive a cost-effective pathway to digital modernization.
Virtual Learning Meets Local Needs
The inaugural cohort included students from eight of UVA’s twelve schools, all of whom completed Google’s AI Professional Certificate before being assigned to partners. The entire process was conducted virtually and asynchronously, a structural choice that broadened participation. This format allowed student athletes to work around practice schedules and enabled international students to contribute while traveling. It also facilitated connections with businesses beyond the immediate Charlottesville area, reaching firms in Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Salem.
The participating organizations varied widely, ranging from tech startups and law firms to the Charlottesville public library and independent real estate agents. Despite their different industries, they shared a common bottleneck: they understood the value of AI but did not know how to start. Practical Solutions and Clear Boundaries
Student teams focused on tangible outcomes, such as building website chatbots, optimizing marketing strategies, and creating internal guidelines for AI use. One notable example involved a construction company that tasked students with developing a cost estimation tool. This feature allows clients to see approximate project prices instantly, streamlining the sales process. The same firm also worked with students to draft standard policies for employee AI usage, establishing a framework for responsible adoption.
A crucial part of the project was determining where AI should not be used. As Kemi Jona, the vice provost for online education and digital innovation, noted, understanding the limitations of the technology is as important as understanding its capabilities. This emphasis on judgment over mere tool usage ensures that the solutions remain practical and aligned with the specific constraints of small business operations.
Empowering Staff Through Training
The program’s goal was not merely to deliver a finished product, but to leave the organization capable of maintaining and evolving the solution. Students were required to train their partners on how to use the tools independently. This transfer of knowledge ensures that the business retains ownership of its new capabilities, reducing long-term dependency on external technical support.
The approach frames AI adoption as a tool for efficiency and work-life balance rather than just cost-cutting. Jona suggested that helping a small business owner use AI effectively might allow them to leave work earlier or avoid weekend shifts. The program is now accepting applications for a second cohort in the fall, reflecting continued interest from students who see this as a positive and constructive application of emerging technology.
