Artificial intelligence is reshaping how students learn, but educators warn that relying on it for creative and critical tasks may erode essential human skills.

In a recent course on Southern Gothic literature, Stratton assigned students to use AI to analyze the emotional atmosphere of a scene from Carson McCullers’ novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. The passage involves a deaf character being sent away to an asylum, a moment charged with dread, sadness, and injustice. However, the AI’s response was clinical and abstract. It described the scene as "quiet" and "emotionally one-sided" without capturing the profound weight of the separation or the specific cultural tensions at play.

The analysis even contained a factual error, misidentifying a bus as a train. More importantly, it failed to grasp the dramatic irony and the character’s fear for the future. This illustrates a key trade-off: AI functions as an optimization engine that synthesizes data, but it lacks the embodied experience necessary to understand context, nuance, and human perspective. The result is often a shallow summary that misses the point entirely.

The risk of intellectual conformity

Researchers are beginning to document how AI dependency can erode the habit of wrestling with difficult ideas. When students outsource their thinking to algorithms, they risk losing the ability to form original opinions or engage in deep critical analysis. This creates a cultural risk where intellectual diversity diminishes as responses become standardized and predictable. The hard work of developing a unique voice becomes less valuable in a landscape dominated by average, synthesized outputs.

Teaching the limits of technology

Stratton suggests that educators must confront these issues head-on by teaching students to distinguish between AI’s pattern-recognition capabilities and its inability to authentically express or inhabit human perspectives. The goal is not to reject the technology, but to use it as a tool for comparison. By seeing where the AI fails to capture the human element, students can better appreciate the value of their own critical thinking and creative efforts.
