Organizers of multilingual events are increasingly looking to eliminate the heavy machinery that has traditionally defined simultaneous interpretation. A new platform introduced by LiveVoice, based in Salzburg, Austria, promises to replace rented receivers and transmitters with cloud-based audio streaming. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the system delivers live translations in over 70 languages directly to attendees' personal devices. According to reports from GN technics/hardware, this shift could reduce typical translation costs by as much as 80 percent, a significant change for budgets that have long struggled with equipment logistics.
The traditional model of providing language access involves a complex web of physical infrastructure. Organizers must rent individual receivers for every attendee, install transmitters, and often construct or rent interpreter booths. This equipment requires shipping, on-site staffing, daily distribution, and careful reconciliation to account for lost items. For smaller conferences or nonprofit gatherings, these logistical hurdles often mean that language access is simply cut from the plan entirely, leaving non-native speakers without a way to follow the proceedings.
Smartphones replace rented hardware units
The new approach strips out the physical layer almost entirely. Instead of handing out plastic boxes, organizers create an event via a digital dashboard and define a channel for each required language. Attendees then access the stream through a QR code or a smart link on their own smartphones, tablets, or laptops. They simply put in their earbuds and select their preferred language. This method removes the need for shipping crates, managing inventory, and the administrative burden of tracking who has which device.
The system is designed for a wide variety of settings, from corporate annual general meetings to international press conferences and even guided tours. Because the platform is cloud-based, interpreters can work from a browser console located anywhere in the world. This flexibility allows professionals to join remotely, which eliminates travel and accommodation expenses from the event budget. Setup for the organizer is reduced to a few minutes of digital configuration rather than hours of physical installation.
Cost savings drive adoption
The primary appeal of this technology is financial. Traditional simultaneous interpretation costs extend far beyond the fees paid to interpreters. The line items for equipment rental, transport, and labor can run into tens of thousands of euros for a large conference. By removing these hardware-related costs, the platform makes multilingual access more affordable for organizations that previously could not justify the expense. This is particularly relevant for nonprofits and smaller community gatherings that serve diverse audiences but operate on tight budgets.
Reliance on personal devices creates trade-offs
However, shifting the infrastructure to the attendee's pocket is not without its challenges. The model relies heavily on the quality of the user's personal equipment and their data connection. In venues with poor cellular coverage or crowded Wi-Fi networks, the streaming audio may suffer from buffering or latency. Additionally, not every attendee will have high-quality earbuds, which can affect the clarity of the translation.
