Amazon Deploys 50 Electric Mercedes Trucks in Germany

Amazon is expanding its electric fleet in Europe with a new batch of heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz trucks, aiming to reduce emissions on longer haul routes.
Amazon has announced that it will place 50 new battery-electric semi-trucks into service in Germany before the end of 2026. This move marks a significant step for the company’s logistics network, as it shifts focus from local package delivery to longer-distance freight between distribution hubs and cities. The vehicles are part of a larger order of more than 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 models, representing one of the company's largest-ever purchases of electric heavy-duty trucks.
According to Electrek, this deployment is intended to address the environmental impact of middle-mile transport. While electric vans are already common for final deliveries, the use of large electric trucks for routes spanning several hundred kilometers is less common. Amazon states that this initiative is a key part of its strategy to decarbonize its global transportation operations, with specific investments exceeding one billion euros across Europe.
Performance specs face real-world limits
The eActros 600 models are equipped with large 621 kWh battery packs, which manufacturers claim provide a range of approximately 500 kilometers. These trucks are designed to handle heavy loads, operating with a combined vehicle weight of around 36 metric tons. The efficiency figures cited by the manufacturer are competitive with other emerging electric semi-trucks, such as the Tesla Semi, though these claims are often based on ideal testing conditions rather than daily commercial use.
However, there is a clear trade-off in adopting this technology. Electric semi-trucks are significantly heavier than their diesel counterparts due to the mass of the batteries. This added weight can affect fuel efficiency in diesel comparisons and requires specific road infrastructure. Furthermore, the 500-kilometer range is an optimistic estimate; in real-world scenarios, particularly during winter months with colder temperatures and higher energy demands for cabin heating, the effective range will likely be lower. This necessitates careful route planning to ensure vehicles do not run out of power between charging stops.
Charging infrastructure requires major investment
To support these new vehicles, Amazon is installing hundreds of direct current fast chargers throughout the region. These chargers are designed to replenish the truck batteries from 20% to 80% in just over one hour. This rapid charging capability is crucial for keeping the trucks on schedule, as downtime for charging can disrupt the tight logistics timelines required for e-commerce delivery. The infrastructure investment is a substantial part of the over one billion euro commitment to electrify European operations.
The financial scale of this project is notable, with more than 400 million euros dedicated specifically to German operations. An analysis commissioned by Amazon suggests these investments have supported over 35,000 jobs and contributed significantly to the local economy. However, the success of the program depends on the reliability of the charging network and the ability of the trucks to maintain performance in varying weather conditions, which remains a challenge for the broader adoption of electric heavy freight.
Strategic shift in logistics model
Amazon’s strategy reflects a broader industry trend toward electrifying long-haul transport. By integrating electric trucks into its middle-mile operations, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions from a sector that has historically been difficult to green. The partnership with Mercedes-Benz is described as a confidence boost for the technology, signaling that electric heavy-duty trucks are becoming a viable option for commercial logistics rather than just a future concept.
Nevertheless, the transition is not without challenges. The high upfront cost of electric semi-trucks and the need for specialized charging infrastructure represent significant barriers to entry. For Amazon, the investment is justified by long-term savings on fuel and maintenance, as well as regulatory pressures to reduce emissions. The outcome of this deployment will be closely watched as a test case for the feasibility of electric trucks in high-volume, long-distance commercial shipping.
