A long-standing limitation of the platform is finally being addressed, allowing users to display posts created by others directly on their main feed rather than hiding them in a separate tab.

Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to add photos in which they are tagged to their main profile grid. Previously, such posts were confined to a specific 'Tagged' tab, separate from the user's own content. This change enables people to highlight favorite group shots, collaborative works, or memorable moments involving friends and creators without having to repost or save them separately.

The update aims to give users more control over their digital identity and how they present their social connections. While the dedicated Tagged tab remains available for viewing all mentions, the new option provides a way to curate a more cohesive visual narrative on the primary profile page. As reported by Engadget, this feature is designed to simplify the process of showcasing shared experiences alongside personal uploads.

Multiple methods for adding posts

Users can promote tagged content to their grid through several different interfaces. The process can be initiated directly from a direct message notification when a tag is received. Alternatively, users can access the three-dot menu on any post where they appear and select the add-to-grid option. A third method involves pressing and holding a post within the Tagged tab, which reveals the same action. This redundancy ensures that the feature is accessible regardless of how the user navigates the app.

Privacy settings determine visibility

A crucial caveat accompanies this new functionality. Adding a tagged photo to your grid does not override the privacy settings of the original poster or your own account. If the original post is private, or if your account settings restrict who can view your content, the added photo will remain hidden from those outside your allowed audience. This means that while you can curate the post on your end, you cannot force it to be public if the underlying permissions do not allow it.

Reordering posts for aesthetic control

Newly added tagged posts appear in reverse chronological order by default. However, users can rearrange these items to fit their desired aesthetic. This capability builds on the reordering feature Instagram introduced earlier this year, which allows users to move posts around their grid regardless of their original publication date. This flexibility lets users create a specific visual flow, mixing their own content with tagged photos to achieve a curated look.
