BYD Launches Heavy-Duty Electric Truck with Rapid Charging

BYD has unveiled its ETT 44, a heavy-duty electric tractor designed for long-haul logistics. The vehicle features a high-speed charging system that aims to reduce downtime for fleet operators.
BYD Commercial Vehicles has introduced the ETT 44, its most advanced heavy-duty electric truck, at the IAA Transportation 2026 exhibition in Hanover. The vehicle is designed specifically for long-distance transport rather than being an adaptation of a diesel platform. It represents a significant step in the company's push to become a major player in Europe's commercial electric vehicle market.

This architecture prioritizes energy efficiency, battery performance, and driver comfort. The launch is part of a broader strategy to offer zero-emission solutions for various logistics sectors, from urban distribution to long-haul freight.
Fast Charging Reduces Downtime
One of the primary challenges for electric trucking is the time required to recharge. BYD addresses this with its FLASH Charging technology, which can deliver up to 1.5 megawatts of power. The company states that this system allows the ETT 44 to charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. This rapid session adds roughly 248 miles of driving range, significantly reducing the time trucks spend stationary at charging stations.
Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, noted that this technology has already been tested in passenger vehicles. Bringing it to heavy commercial trucks is intended to keep vehicles on the road longer. However, the trade-off for this high-speed charging is the requirement for specialized infrastructure that can handle such high power loads, which may not be universally available yet.
Extended Battery Warranty Coverage
The ETT 44 uses BYD's proprietary Blade Battery, which comes with a warranty lasting ten years or 1.2 million kilometers. This coverage period is significantly longer than the standard warranties typically offered for commercial vehicle batteries in Europe. For fleet managers, this extended guarantee provides greater financial security when calculating the long-term costs of switching from diesel to electric.
While the warranty offers peace of mind, it also reflects the company's confidence in the durability of its battery cells. Operators should note that while the warranty is robust, the overall cost of ownership depends on how well the vehicle is maintained and utilized within the specified limits.
Integrated Mobility Ecosystem Approach
BYD is positioning the ETT 44 not just as a vehicle, but as part of a Total Cost of Mobility strategy. This approach combines vehicle efficiency, charging infrastructure, energy storage, and financing into a single package. By controlling multiple parts of the supply chain, including batteries and energy management, BYD aims to simplify the transition to electric fleets.
The company is also displaying a wider range of commercial vehicles, including rigid trucks and yard tractors. This broad lineup allows customers to adopt electric solutions for different operational needs. The catch is that this integrated model requires operators to adopt a holistic view of their logistics, rather than simply replacing individual trucks, which may involve a more complex transition process.
