Tesla Cybertruck finally works with Powerwall home backup

Tesla has enabled its Cybertruck to support home backup power alongside a Powerwall 3, resolving a major limitation that previously forced owners to choose between the two systems.

Tesla announced on Thursday that its Cybertruck can now provide emergency power to a home while simultaneously operating with a Powerwall 3 battery. This update allows the two systems to function as a single unit, significantly extending the duration of backup power. According to the company, the combined setup offers more than three days of energy, which Tesla estimates is equivalent to the capacity of nine additional Powerwall units.

The feature was originally promised for 2025, but its arrival marks a delay of nearly two years since Cybertruck deliveries began. Despite the late release, the update addresses one of the most persistent complaints from owners: the inability to use the truck’s battery if they had already invested in Tesla’s home energy hardware. This change closes a critical gap in the vehicle's utility for existing customers.

Combined system doubles backup capacity

Previously, owners had to choose between using the Cybertruck or the Powerwall for home backup; they could not use both at the same time. This limitation made the truck less useful for buyers who had already purchased Tesla’s home energy products. Now, the Powerwall 3 continues to manage the home’s energy load as usual, while the Cybertruck’s 123 kilowatt-hour battery pack extends the total runtime.

The math behind Tesla’s claim is straightforward. A single Powerwall holds 13.5 kilowatt-hours, so nine units would total 121.5 kilowatt-hours, which closely matches the truck’s battery size. The system can push up to 11.5 kilowatts of power into the home, requiring specific hardware to function correctly. This integration turns the vehicle into a substantial extension of the home’s existing energy infrastructure.

Hardware costs remain a significant barrier

While the software update is free, utilizing this feature requires specific physical components. Owners need a Universal Wall Connector and a Powershare Gateway, which together cost approximately $4,000 to install. However, reported costs vary widely, with some owners receiving quotes exceeding $30,000. This price discrepancy highlights a trade-off: the convenience of combined backup power comes with a potentially high and unpredictable upfront cost for the necessary infrastructure.

The delay in releasing this feature has been attributed to complex engineering challenges. Coordinating two grid-forming devices, the truck and the battery, to work safely without a network connection was more difficult than anticipated. These technical hurdles, along with grid-safety certifications, contributed to the timeline slipping from 2025 to 2026. The release now completes the consumer-facing pieces of Tesla’s plan to use the Cybertruck as a grid asset.

Context of delayed feature rollout

Tesla first launched the Powershare feature in late 2023 but delayed the Powerwall integration multiple times. In October 2024, the company told owners the update would arrive in 2025, a date that eventually passed without the feature being delivered. By December 2025, the timeline was pushed to mid-2026, admitting to a delay of nearly a full calendar year. Even in late August, Tesla engineers had no firm date, leaving owners in uncertainty for months.

Electrek notes that this update is part of a broader effort to integrate the Cybertruck into the energy grid. The vehicle has already been approved for vehicle-to-grid programs in Texas and California, making it one of the first AC vehicle-to-grid assets in the region. While the home backup integration is now available, the system remains limited to Tesla’s proprietary hardware, preventing interoperability with other brands’ batteries or vehicles. This closed ecosystem may limit the feature’s broader appeal to a niche segment of users.
